Gabe and Nico and Holiday Traditions
Use this link to register
This will be a perfect way to get into the holiday spirit.  Hear from Gabe and Nico about some of the traditions in their country and their homes. We will also be treated by some of our talented members as they sing and act their way through their own production of A ROTARIAN CAROL, a new take on A Christmas Carol with a Pandaka being shown the reasons why they want to be a part of Rotary.

2019 Toys for Kids Shopping Night

Our carts were overflowing and the shelves were getting bare as we shopped for over 200 children on Tuesday, December 10. Our hearts were warmed by knowing that we were helping families who have critically ill children at Mary Bridge. Special thanks to members (and their friends and families)  who stayed up way past their normal bedtimes;  Betty Capestany, Libby Catalinich, Elaine Chan, Jacki Farrar, Julie Foley, Becky Fontaine, Maria Harlow, Diane Kelleher, Cindy Niemi, Molly Peterson, Christina Turner, Monique Valenzuala, Ann Voves, Jennifer Weddermann, Kathi Willis and John Winskill.
We had an incredible group of Rotarians working hard on Saturday December 14 packing 1,000 Break Bags for the Emergency Food Network.  Talk about People of Action, these members are super;  Phillip Carter, Mike Dunbar, Maria Harlow, Donna Haynes, Seth Kaplowitz, Kelly Lane, Gil Quante, Greg Rolsma, and Jim Whitacre.   These folks also included their friends and family to share their hearts and hands of service!
Gifts ready for pickup
We are spreading joy. Thanks so much to all of the members who took tags from the Giving Tree, staffed the tree and those who called in to say they could help as well! We had over 60 participants and helped well over 150 kids and their families.  The gifts that were purchased with thoughtful care and all of the gift cards that were donated were valued at well over $5,000.  Thanks for making the holidays brighter for children that you will never know, but who are grateful for your caring.  Here is a list of the Elves!

Message from Taylor in Finland!
I've been with my second family for exactly one week, and they are the best. I already know I'm going to love my time here!
For Christmas, I am incredibly fortunate to be able to spend it with my host family in their summer cottage all the way north in Lapland, in a town called Muonio. We will be there for a total of two weeks. I think Christmas in the actual north pole will be amazing! I will have a Christmas lunch with my rotary club before we leave, but I'm not expected to give a presentation.
Its good to hear that they have snow in Norway! They have it in northern Finland, but I live in the south very near the coast. We had snow for a few days but sadly it's all melted away. The weather here is much the same as in Western Washington being grey and rainy most of the time. That combined with the early darkness really does wear me down at times, but I'm fortunate to have a supportive host family and friends, and soon when the snow comes it will all be bright and beautiful!
I've made lots of exchange friends during the rotary events, and I've been able to meet up with them a few times. I have one group of five that I met the first week in language camp who I've really bonded with. Three of us spent the day in Turku visiting all the historical sites, as well as a day in Tampere some weeks later. They live quite far from me so it's not often that we get to meet. The trip to Lapland was really fun because it was the first time since language camp that all 5 of us were together.

2019 CHARITABLE DONATIONS AND ACCOUNTING INFORMATION

At this time of year, many members decide to make year-end donations.  If you are interested in giving to the Tacoma Rotary Foundation or to the club’s fundraising account we must have your check or credit card number for processing by noon on December 31.  For those of you who are of the age when you need to take a Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA we want to remind you that you can do a Qualified Charitable Distribution to the Tacoma Rotary Foundation. These are also referred to as an IRA Charitable Rollover and because the money goes directly to charity you are able to avoid taxes, because it is no longer considered income to you. You should always consult a tax professional or lawyer if you are considering a sizable gift. If you would like to make a donation to Rotary International Foundation please contact them directly here. If you are sending a check it must be postmarked on December 31 in order for it to count as a 2019 donation. Upcoming Socials
The Fellowship/Relationship Building Committee invites all members of Tacoma #8 to join them on Thursdays at 5 pm. These socials are a great way to meet some new Rotarians or catch up with old friends. Pandakas, these meetings will fulfill your "social" requirement prior to graduation and, for all members, it’s fun.

Thursdays at 5 at Ben Bridge
We had a great group of members enjoying wonderful hospitality from Molly Peterson, Cathy Hall and Bob Swanson as well as some of their staff.  We had time to learn about Ben Bridge and it looked like there was some holiday shopping happening as well. Our gracious hosts also had a photo booth and little favors as we left.  We all enjoyed great company as well as yummy food and beverages.  Phil Carter was there to check it out as he will be our host for our first meeting of the new year on January 9 -  Thursdays at 5 at the YMCA!
