THURSDAYS AT 5 AT THE YMCA!!

The Y is excited to host Rotary 8’s upcoming Thursdays at 5. In partnership with the University of Washington Tacoma, we invite you to experience the new University Y Student Center. You will experience a personalized health and well-being experience as well as meet Y staff and volunteer leaders serving a variety of areas in our community. This will include information about the new Scott and Sis Names Family YMCA, arts outreach, teen outreach, and more. Hear from local business man, philanthropist, and community volunteer, Cal Bamford. Also in attendance will be University of Washington Tacoma Chancellor Mark Pagano.  As if that weren’t enough, we will hear from Charlie Davis, President and CEO of the YMCA. These leaders will discuss the collaboration that continues to make the University Y a success.

Appetizers will be served. Please feel free to dress casual and be ready to have fun! Please RSVP using this link.

Time for 2020 Rotarian of the Year Nominations
Each year, our club recognizes a Rotarian who has provided exemplary service to the club and to our community.  It is that time of year again – we are now seeking nominations from our membership for our 2020 Rotarian of the Year.
So put on your thinking caps and nominate someone to be our 2020 Rotarian of the Year.  To do so, complete a nomination form available at meetings or use this link and send it to  the Rotary 8 Office (clubadmin@rotary8.org).  Criteria for selection are included on the nomination form. Use this link to see our past Rotarians of the Year
Please submit any nominations no later than the close of business Thursday January 23.  The selection committee, including Past Presidents, Past Rotarians of the Year and current and incoming Presidents will meet immediately following the Rotary meeting on Thursday, January 30 to go over all the nominations and select the next worthy recipient of this prestigious award.
The recipient of this year’s Rotarian of the Year award will be honored at our lunch meeting on Thursday, February 27 where he or she will receive a Paul Harris Fellowship and tremendous adulation, followed by thundering applause, all in recognition of their outstanding service.  That evening, they will also be treated to a first-rate dinner in the company of Past Rotarians of the Year.
Although many are deserving, only one can be honored as our Rotarian of the Year.  Please take the time to nominate our club’s most commendable Rotarian.
SCIENCE OLYMPIAD VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We have the opportunity to kick off the new year with another wonderful chance to serve our community.  The Science Olympiad will be held at Curtis Jr. High School on Saturday January 11. There are a wide variety of volunteer options with some starting as early as 7 am and some that will end at 530.  They need help with many tasks such as helping to manage/grade tests, manage events, sort the paperwork to be delivered to the various schools, concession stand duties, and organizing the score room information as the events are processed. Please contact  Gil Quante at gil.quante@n2pub.com or Jim Whitacre at whit@wamail.net  if you would like to help.

Special thanks to all of our committees and the work they do to keep our club vibrant. Along with the Committees listed above our Communications Committee is capturing our meeting photos, working on our Facebook page and has produced articles for our District Magazine. Our Engagement and Pandaka Committees are assuring new and seasoned members are fully involved in the club.  Our Program Committee continues to recruit and manage interesting and thoughtful meeting speakers. Our Finance Committee helps every week with fine-counting as well as reviewing our financials.  Our Scholarship Committee is gearing up for the new year and is tracking the dedicated students who have received awards. Our Classification Committee works closely with membership to assign classifications to our new members. Our Fellowship Committee continues to provide social opportunities for members to gather outside of our weekly meetings. Our Military Affairs Committee produced a touching and thoughtful Veterans Day program and continue to look for other ways the club can support the military men and women in our community. Our small but mighty Vocational Services Committee recruits meeting sponsors every week as well as our Thursday at 5 hosts.  Be looking for an announcement soon from this committee for the Business Expo in the spring! Last, but certainly not least is the committee that has a HUGE impact on our ability to do everything listed above - our wonderful Auction Committee.  They are Calling All Heroes for the auction on May 2, there is a place for every single member to make a difference!

If you aren't yet tied into a committee what a great New Year resolution for you!

Thought for the Week
