The letters requesting support were mailed just over 4 weeks ago and what wonderful response we have received, with gifts and pledges of $40,000. Please let us know if you did not receive a letter. We are really hoping for 100% participation and would like to exceed our fundraising total from last year which was just over $63,000. Watch for the honor roll of donors at an upcoming meeting!
Renata will be here today! (August 20) all the way from Paraguay. Thanks to Becky Fontaine, who will be her first host family and to Annie Ramirez, who will be her counsellor.  Jacob arrives from Norway on August 25, his host family are wonderful non-rotarians and Carol Webster is his counsellor! The Youth Exchange Committee continues to work on vetting the 6 host families who are needed for the Exchange. Thanks to this dedicated group of volunteers and club members who make this happen. Please consider inviting the students on your outings while they are with us.
We need to turn our attention to recruiting Tacoma students to travel abroad, do you know a student? This is an incredible opportunity and should be considered like a $24,000 international scholarship. Contact Marsha Burns or Diane Tilstra for information, or check out the district website at www.rye5020.org. Interviews will take place in September.

Welcome new members !
We welcomed 2 more wonderful members on August 16.  Betty Capestany joins us from the Bellevue Club and had prior service in Renton and Emerald City. She has more than 26 years as a Rotarian.  We are excited that she is continuing her service with us. She is new to our area and is the Economic Development Director for Pierce County.   She and her husband have a blended family with 4 boys and goats.  She clarified that even though "they" have goats they really belong to her husband. She loves to do marathons and explore the streets around the world. Alex Davis is following in his fathers footsteps, not only as a pastor, but also as a member of our club. Some of our senior members remember the years that Alfred was in the Club. Alex is also the Owner of iChallengeLife a youth mentorship program.  You can expect to see Alex providing the reflection/invocation at an upcoming meeting. Please introduce yourself to these great new members and invite them to join you on a committee!

Reflections from the Meeting of 8-16 from Brenda Gasper
President Linda Kaye rang the bell at 12:05 followed by the invocation. Pat Steel gave a thoughtful invocation asking that we all be moved to help the less fortunate. We also joined in the four way test and the National Anthem. President Linda Kaye thanked Sherri Stantonand DeAnne Hamilton at KBTC for the great Thursday at 5 and commended the club for a great turnout.
Cindy Niemi and Maddie Merton helped with mics as visiting Rotarians & and guests were introduced. We had the pleasure of many guests...among them were, Jim Leonard of the Downtown Olympia Club and the Presidents of Bates and TCC, as well as a short term exchange student and her guest from Italy.
President Linda Kaye called forward Libby Catalinch for her new member introduction of Betty Capestany and then Mark Anderson for his introduction of Alex Davis. Betty is the new Director of Economic Development for Pierce County. This is the 4th Rotary Club she has been a member of with her last one being Bellevue. She first joined Rotary in her 20's and was following the footsteps of her father. Betty comes from a blended family with 4 sons and loves to run Marathons. Betty shared her enthusiasm for joining our club as she has a real heart for community. Alex is the Pastor at Eastside Assembly of Believers. The church has been serving the Tacoma community for 54 years. Alex's father was also a Rotarian. Alex is committed to being part of the greater good. He is the founder of  iChallengeLife- and is doing good work with youth through the mentorship program called Kings in Training working in the lives of boys ages 4 - 18.
President Linda Kaye surprised us with a mid-meeting opportunity for True Confessions: Pat Steel donated $100 and announced "Man Alive I'm 85!"  Carolyn Weyrick  announced her thanks for asylum granted to former Tacoma Exchange Student and adopted daughter, Val.  Elliot Stockstad announced he has accepted a new position as Chief Development Officer at Lutheran Community Services NW serving WA, OR and ID. He thanked the club for their support of his efforts at Habitat for Humanity and reassured everyone he would still be an active club member and Habitat supporter. Jeff Gellert traveled for a month on a trip to Montana and Idaho visiting family and river rafting for 12 days! He also thanked Bob Swanson at Ben Bridge for helping him find the perfect 40th Wedding Anniversary Ring.
President Linda Kaye gave the podium to Debbie Regala for the meeting sponsor (Habitat for Humantiy) presentation. Debbie invited everyone to come participate in or support the Habitat Challenge on Saturday, September 9th at the Murano Hotel. The event, sponsored by Multicare Health System, gives participants the opportunity to repel down the side of  the Murano Hotel to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity.
Anniversaries were recognized: Larry Treleven - 39 years Jim Henderson - 34 years Phil Berggren - 34 years Doug Rohner - 26 years Barbara Mead - 23 years Mike Bitterling - 23 years Chris Hays - 16 years Lori Bemis - 8 years Anita Eixenberger - 2 years Joan Engle - 2 years Hunter George - 2 years Sherri Stanton - 2 years Lori Harnick - 1 year. President Linda Kaye asked anyone who hadn't talked with any of these great members celebrating 212 years of service to Rotary to throw $2 on the table in their honor!
Members came forward to make announcements: Gil Quante - Habitat Build dates are set and you need to sign up online, first date is August 18. sign up by using the link in the Gearshift. He also requested volunteers for the Emergency Food Network Repack on August 25th from noon to 2:00.
Diane Kelleher and Carolyn Weyrick - reported that volunteers are still needed for the Courage Beer Garden at Pack Forest in Eatonville on 8-25. Sign up sheets are in the bucket on the tables. They also recruited some members who will provide games for the riders to play. Kirsten Willis announced the  Auction kick off meeting on 8-22 at 5:15 in the Rotary office. Sign-up sheets are in the buckets on the table. The first 15 minutes will be for snacking and socializing and then we will discuss business from 530-630. Carol Duris announced that the Mount Rushmore Dinner with the presidents has 4 more spaces left. It is on September 8th from 4 - 8 pm and the price is $125.  President Linda Kaye encouraged members to consider all those great opportunities to get involved.
President Linda Kaye asked Bryan Flint of the Metro Parks Foundation to introduce our guest speaker Shalisa Hayes. Shalisa shared with us the story of her son Billy Ray. At the age of 17, Billy Ray already had a heart for the community and asked his mom how someone would go about opening a community center. He recognized the need for kids on the Eastside to have a safe place to go and be engaged. Later that year, Billy Ray was shot and tragically killed at an after hours party. Shalisa instantly knew that she wanted to make the community center a reality and shared Billy Ray's desire for a community center at his memorial. Two days after the service a group of kids, who later came to be known as Team Billy Ray, raised $700 with a car wash. Six months later they were at the capital asking for $500,000 and were given $400,000. Now, 7 years after Billy Ray lost his life, they will be opening a $31 million, 2 story, state of the art community center on the Eastside of Tacoma. The grand opening will be celebrated on October 20th kicking off with a parade from Salishan. Shalisa continues to work along with Team Billy Ray to further their mission of reducing violence and engaging kids in positive activities. She has traveled all over the world sharing her story. The club members were truly touched and inspired by her story. Brian Flint thanked the many Rotarians who have been a critical part of the collaborative partnership that has helped raised almost $10 million of the private philanthropy that will reach $11.5 of the $31 million. President Linda Kaye thanked Shalisa for her powerful and inspirational story and presented her with an original gift of art designed by the students at Hilltop Artists.
President Linda Kaye adjourned the meeting after reminding the club of the social at Stanley and Seaforts, welcoming Betty and Alex to the club and sharing her excitement for the next meeting with the 2016 Washington State Teacher of the Year. She encouraged everyone to leave with inspiration that will Reignite Your Rotary and rang the bell.
