We are almost done!  Tim Smith was able to get away from the office Thursday afternoon and with power screwdriver in hand finished our 20 conference room chairs. Thanks to Tim and James Harper and Noah Baskett who were also ready to be at the office on Friday. About the last item to accomplish is hanging pictures if anyone has a good eye and wants to lend a hand let us know.  The smell of fresh paint and varnish is slowly fading and the office looks like we are getting things done!

She received her Bachelors degree from Indiana University and Masters from the University of Alabama.  Her family moved to Tacoma in 2002 and she was at University of Puget Sound for 15 years. She is well known in the community for her many leadership and volunteer activities and currently works for Windermere Professional Partners and is the Founder and CEO of Raising Girls Organization.Be sure to ask Sharon about her many hobbies.
James Harper is an native of Connecticut and came to Tacoma about 8 years ago through AmeriCorps. He was introduced to the club by his sponsor DeAnne Hamilton.  He works for St. Leo Food Connection and has gotten to know many of our members through our support of that organization.   In his visits to our club he discovered an admiration for what we do in the community and is looking forward to serving our community through Rotary.  He stated that he would enjoy a cup of coffee with you so he could talk about table top games, cedar strip canoes and the environment.
Ivan Harrell was the 3rd introduction on May 16 and Pamela Transue was pleased to welcome the President of Tacoma Community College to the club. Dr. Harrell was born in Ohio, but came to Tacoma from his last position at Georgia Piedmont Technical College.  He has a diverse background in higher education and we are so fortunate that he landed in Tacoma. Dr. Harrell is a published author and engaging speaker. Reflections from the meeting of May 16 by Noah Baskett
President Linda Kay Briggs rang the bell and Brenda Gasper, Brooks Dental led us with an invocation. Don Sheppard spoke on behalf of The Salvation Army as the meeting sponsor, expressing deep gratitude for the many years of fruitful partnership in serving homeless community members alongside Rotary #8. Jeremy Simler, NW Furniture Bank and Carol Webster managed the roving mics as we introduced a number of guests.
We were delighted to welcome three new members into our fold: James Harper is development coordinator at St. Leo's Food Connection. Coming to Tacoma originally as an AmeriCorps member with the Food Network, James has a ten year history of living and service in Tacoma.  Sharon Chambers Gordon, came to the US via Jamaica in 1989. With many degrees to her name, she found herself in Tacoma in 2002 as the Director of Fellowships and Scholarships at the University of Puget Sound. A tireless community advocate and volunteer, Ms. Gordon is also full time realtor with Windermere Professional Partners.  Dr. Ivan Harrell is the relatively new president of Tacoma Community College as well as one of the newest members of Rotary #8. With a passion for community college education, and having served in many different regions of the country, Dr. Harrell is excited to deepen his place in this Tacoma community.
There was then a report out from those who attended the District 5020 Training and Conference earlier in May in Victoria, BC. Linda Kaye Briggs, along with a team of Rotarians, including Tracy Peacock and Monique Nadeau, had a wonderful time of fellowship. They lugged home a trophy-case full of awards and honors as well, nearly sinking the ferry—including (but not limited to) the club’s “Membership Retention Award” with an 86.5% retention rate of members, and Linda Kaye Briggs receiving the “Meritorious Service Award.”
Mr. Rick Garza, director of the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board then gave a fascinating presentation on the state of Cannabis Legalization, 5 years later.  8 countries and 32 states have visited Washington to learn how our system was put together.  Of particular note is the revenue thus far generated by cannabis sales is double that of projections, with nearly $1.5 B in annual sales last year, and approaching $400 M generated in excise taxes for Washington State. This money goes to provide for basic health needs of the working poor, public health, substance abuse prevention and research, along with the state general fund.
Fines and True Confessions included; Chris Serface - paying his birthday fine, Noah Baskett - celebrating recent $1.6 million grant to help build a shelter for Women and Families, Jennifer Weddermann - celebrating adding additional staff for her Architecture firm, plus her daughter attending Charles Wright, Mark Anderson- did not attend the District Conference this year, Mike Wark - celebrating success with the Legislature for UW-T, plus moving to a new position at Pierce College, George Pilant - inviting members to attend the May 31 fund-raiser for St. Vincent DePaul Tacoma, Jeremy Fogelquist - has missed some meetings and his birthday, Arvind Phukan - on the release of his auto biography.  The meeting adjourned shortly after one as we were told to go out and Re Ignite Rotary.
