The Biodiversity of Commencement Bay: It's Alive!

As we clean Commencement Bay, life is returning to its shores. We’ll explore the whales, birds, fish, and invertebrates of our local waters and discuss the future of biodiversity in Tacoma waters. Enjoy the insight from these three experts.

Bonnie J. Becker is an Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Washington Tacoma. With her students, she studies commercially and ecologically important shellfish in the Salish Sea. She is interested in the small but important invertebrates living in the mud at the bottom of Commencement Bay.

Nathalie Hamel coordinates the Puget Sound Indicators program at the Puget Sound Partnership. The Puget Sound Partnership is a "backbone organization" working in support of the recovery of the health of Puget Sound. As part of the Science Team, Nathalie works with scientists throughout the region to report on the status and trends of the ecosystem, from water, all the way up to whales!

Sherrie Duncan is owner of Sky Environmental, a small, woman-owned business specializing in natural resource management and conservation.  Sherrie’s career as a fisheries biologist and restoration ecologist has taken her full circle, starting in her childhood home of Puyallup, ranging as far as Southeast Alaska, and returning to Tacoma in the Puyallup Watershed.

They have arrived!!
Looking forward to a great year with Veerle and Nick!

September 30th we have a fantastic Rotary evening planned starting at 5:15 with a fun social at the highly popular Peaks and Pints - Taproom and Eatery in the Proctor District! Next we'll be attending Tacoma Little Theatre's production of "Rumors." It was Neil Simon's first farce . . . and reads like a classic Twilight Zone episode.
"Rumors," is a madcap, slamming door farce set in a large home located just outside of New York in the year 1988. The characters are arriving as guests at a 10th Anniversary Dinner. The first couple to arrive discovers that one of their hosts (Charley) has apparently attempted suicide...unsuccessfully. Charley's wife, Myra, is nowhere to be found and neither are the servants. Through the course of the show, the audience never meets Charley or Myra. As more guests arrive, there are cover-ups, deceptions, mistaken identities, and a lot of huge laughs.
Join us for the "Rumors" Social at Peaks and Pints - 5:15 pm on Saturday Evening, September 30th. Rotary members will receive a 10% Food Discount - "We're a mountain-themed tavern with tasty sandwiches, salads, appetizers and desserts." The address is 3816 North Proctor - (253) 328-5621
If you can't join us at the social, then curtain time is 7:30 pm at Tacoma Little Theatre, 210 North I St, Tacoma, WA 98403, (253) 272-2281.
For tickets, send checks (only $15 per person, so bring a friends) to the Rotary Office, PO Box 1777, Tacoma, WA 98401 or call for credit card purchases 253-473-7723. You can also pay for the tickets at any upcoming meeting.
Please, join us for a laugh filled evening on Saturday, September 30th!

Reflections from the meeting of August 24 by Kim Bedier

Rotarians were warmly greeted upon arrival, receiving a lucky number for the day’s seating assignment (Go Table #15!). President Mark Anderson rang the bell at noon – yes, meetings now run from noon to 1 pm – with Christina Turner encouraging us through her thoughtful Invocation to “live out the Four-Way Test”.
Jan Brazzell conducted us in the National Anthem (accompanied by Barbara Mead) and the Four-Way Test.
President Mark noted a card was in circulation for Terry Arca who is recovering from surgery. Our warmest thoughts go out to Terry. Our consternation goes out to anyone who parked over more than one spot in the lot where parking is quite limited – you know who you are. No visiting Rotarians today but a number of guests: Christina Turner introduced Jasmine Goodwin from Columbia Bank; Marsha Burns introduced three former youth exchange students; and Carolyn Weyrick introduced a former exchange student from Venezuela who is now studying at TCC.
Harrison Laird and Malcolm Russell from the Membership Committee coordinated a table topic for discussion: Who is the most famous person you have ever met, and where? Our Rotarians have been in lofty circles, meeting Kings and Queens, rock stars, politicians, sport idols, media figures and moguls. Of note, Past President Becky Fontaine’s childhood brush with fame involved Adam West of Batman fame - “in the Batroom” as pointed out by President Mark to a chorus of groans.
Today’s program focused on Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE). Marsha Burns, co-chair of the RYE Committee noted the program began in 1929 with the goal of creating a more interconnected and understanding world. Today, 9000 students are placed in 80 countries each year. Tacoma has participated since the 1960’s in the short term exchange (3 – 4 weeks) and the long term, year-long exchange. We annually send 2 – 3 students abroad and host a similar number.
Netsie Carlson, our outbound student to Salvador, Brazil in 2016-17, presented an overview of her year away. She stayed with 3 families and attended 2 schools, bonding with her host families but also her Rotary Exchange student family with whom she travelled to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo (and more than a few gorgeous beaches). She returned having learned a second language (Portuguese) and gave us a heartfelt “obrigada”: thank you.
Latasha Wortham from the RYE Committee reminded us that even if we cannot host a student, there are other ways to assist including acting as a counselor to the students. Carol Webster and Dane Meyer are this year’s counselors. Our 2017-18 outbound students (both from Stadium HS) are Abby McDermott who is headed to Chile, and Ali Simyari, headed to Taiwan. We will meet our inbound students soon, and enjoyed video introductions from both: Veerle Obdeijn is from the Netherlands, and Nick Rimanek is from the Czech Republic. Thank you to all of our host families and everyone involved in RYE.
Karen Larsen, also from the RYE Committee asked for all Rotarians to participate:
1.Sign up to be Youth Exchange Officer – a 2-3 year administrative position with commitment of about 15-20 hours per month
2.Help recruit outbound students - only two applications were received this year
3.More host families are needed – one more for this year and 6 for 2018-19 for the program to survive. If you can’t commit to full hosting, please sign up to spend time with our students for a day, overnight, weekend, or special activity. At very least, sign up to host a student at a regular weekly Rotary meeting.
President Mark accepted a Rotary Club banner from a short term exchange student who is visiting from Germany.
Thank you to Meeting Sponsor Bob Swanson of Ben Bridge – there is an Opal Party at Ben Bridge at 5:30pm on Wednesday, Sept 6th featuring Australian opals and wine. Bob encouraged members to take a look at the new Ben Bridge magazine, “Timeless”, on the way out.
Carolyn Weyrick celebrated birthdays for Christina Turner, who told us her once in a lifetime (for now) memory was the Seahawks Super Bowl parade and Fred Matthaei, who was proud of his son working to cure cancer. Other birthday celebrants not in attendance were Laurie Jinkins, Pete Taylor, Ron Lunceford and Michael Wark – best wishes to all. Carolyn reminded us of the volunteer opportunity at the Courage ride beer garden.
President Mark recognized Club anniversaries for Christina Turner (1 year), Rob Roth (17 years), Stephanie Christensen (25 years) and Past President Jim Henderson (33 years).
Kirsten Willis thanked everyone who has already contributed to Project Greater Good.  $29k has been raised to date. Turn in your pledge form by August 31, and you are in the drawing for great Mariners tickets to the Sept 10th game.
Susan Barbeau of the Literacy Committee recognized those who constructed 8 Little Free Libraries in 3 hours. These will go to the Salishan Community to be decorated by local children. Shout out to President Mark who did all the pre-cutting of materials.
Another Emergency Food Network repack opportunity is coming on Saturday Sept 9th, please sign up.
There was only time for one fine, to Carol Webster for a cell phone violation, and for one True Confession: Past President Pat Steel confessed he was happy Jim Whitacre has a new shirt.
REMINDER: August 31st meeting is offsite at CI Shenanigans and will feature Bonnie Becker, Sherri Duncan and Nathalie Hamel on the Biodiversity of Commencement Bay. Sign up for this meeting was required by August 24th.
Meeting was adjourned by President Mark at 1:05 pm with encouragement to “Live Rotary” and regroup at the 5pm social at Casco Antiguo on Dock Street.
