VOL. NINETY-FOUR, Issue No.6

Lori Tsugawa Whaley

Righting a Wrong in Our Backyard

Lori is a 3rd generation Japanese American and a descendant of the Samurai.  She is an inspirational speaker on a mission to make a difference in the world through the ancient principles of the Samurai Warrior.

2017 marks the 75th year anniversary of Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, authorizing the incarceration of approximately 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry living on the west coast based solely on their ethnicity.  Over 7,500 individuals from Washington and Alaska were held at the Puyallup Assembly Center; currently the Washington State Fairgrounds.

After Imperial Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the lives of the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their children (Nisei) were forever changed.  Under these circumstances, how did they survive and maintain their dignity and honor?  Learn how the moral and ethical code, bushido, ‘the way of the warrior,’ was ingrained in the Japanese people and assisted them ‘to do the right thing.’

On September 7, 2017, the 75th Remembrance of Puyallup Assembly Center will be held at the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Washington.

Welcome to Judge Karena Kirkendoll

Karena was introduced by Kathryn Nelson at the meeting on August 3. She was elected last November, but has a long career in law, working as a lawyer, administrative law judge and court commissioner. She is a Washington native and has deep roots tracing back to the settlement of the Washington Territory. She loves to travel and went to Belfast, Ireland last year and enjoyed a Van Morrison concert! Be sure to ask her about the many countries and continents she has visited. She is also into restoring old homes and has worked on a 1905 Craftsman, a 1914 Farmhouse, a 1922 Bungalow and a 1926 Dutch Colonial.  It's great to have her talents in the club!

VEERLE                                         MIKULAS

2017-18 EXCHANGE STUDENT INFORMATION

Hello my name is Mikulas Rimanek and I am 15 years old. I live in Ostrava, Czech Republic. I am a Rotary Exchange student who has been assigned to come to beautiful Tacoma, Washington!

My parents, Tomas and Barbara Rimanek are very excited for me to meet my new host families for the 2017-18 school year at Stadium High School! I have a “very good” rating for my English studies and I speak German too. I have excellent ratings in all my classes. I like to balance my hobbies with my school studies. I love nature, birding and exploring the wild. I am very concerned about the protection of the environment. I think I will study biology and ornithology in university.

I am interested in meeting new people, get to know new places in the world. I am keenly interested in taking biology at Stadium to compare the differences there and in my school. I want to become familiar with organizations that are doing environmental protection operating in Tacoma that can be used in Czech Republic.

I love to eat and cook too!

Will you be my new host family?

Veerle Obdeijn from the Netherlands will be arriving in August  from the village of Markelo about 1.5 hrs outside of Amsterdam. Veerle is an avid horsewoman. She loves music and plays violin. In the summer, she joins her older brother in Friesland for sailing camp.

Veerle bikes to school. She is in secondary school in Holland. Her Dad works as a project manager with an environmental consultancy and her Mom runs an independent recreation business from home. She has an older brother and younger sister. Her parents report that she loves to sing and has a very even tempered personality. She is very responsible and has persisted through various childhood issues with early surgeries. She makes friends and is very gregarious.

Veerle is a well traveled teenager. She has visited European countries and South Africa where she hiked Table Mountain in Cape Town with her family and toured Kruger Park.  This will be her first visit to America.

Won’t you be one of her lucky host families?

It's crunch time! We are looking for meeting sponsors for  August and September (and the rest of the year) . Meeting Sponsor Cost:  $100 per meeting.  We are now allowing a 1 minute video in lieu of a slide and 1-2 minute presentation.

To sponsor a meeting, contact the Rotary office or Vocational Committee Co-Chairs Kim Bedier and Missy Zenczak.

Reflections from the meeting of August 3 by Stephen Deal

President Mark Anderson rang the bell and enthusiastically opened the meeting while members dined on another delicious meal. We enjoyed fettucine Alfredo, chicken breasts, roasted vegetables and the always delicious salad bar and cookies. (Note: We are reminded how lucky we are to have such great support.  Please thank the staff of the Landmark when you see them for their continued great work and welcoming manner.)
Donna Haynes, Pilking, Hopping, and Ekberg Insurance gave a brief invocation invoking grace in all of us, something some of us (including this scribe) are sorely lacking in.
Past President Pat Steel exercised his past presidential prerogative and gave us a brief history lesson on the National Anthem before leading us in the National Anthem accompanied by Jack Warnick on the piano, followed by the 4 way test.
The Meeting Sponsors were members of the   Communications Committee; Jim Henderson, Libby Catalinich, Carol Duris, Jeremy Fogelquist and Michael Thompson and while we did not give them the greatest shout out, we are thankful for their sponsorship and the great work they do.  They Live Rotary every day.  Visiting Rotarians were introduced as well as a host of guests including John Pfaff’s wife Cosette and Rebecca Japhet from Sound Transit. Maria Harlow of the  Names Family Foundation and Tasha Smith, Rebuilding Hope, Sexual Assault Center for Pierce County burned some calories as  they moved around the room with Mics in hand
President Mark called Kathryn Nelson forward for a new member introduction of Karena Kirkendoll. Throughout her career, Karena has worked to guarantee access to justice for all. Karena received her law degree from the University of Puget Sound, and her bachelor’s degree from the University of Idaho. She worked as a judicial officer for over ten years, and as an attorney in private practice for 15 years. She is very active in the legal community and in the community with a long list of volunteer projects and engagement.  Karena has a passion of history and restoring old houses making her an expert hammer user. You know she will hit the mark every time she hammers the gavel in her courtroom.  After the introduction, Mark presented Karena with her pin and badge and gave Kathryn a sponsor pin.
President Mark next introduced Hunter George, Metro Parks, (our serial speaker introductionist,)  Hunter waxed nostalgic about his days as a reporter at The News Tribune, about the demise of discerning news readership,  about the good old days of newspapers and about the big three network TV news programs and anchors. Hunter then introduced David Zeeck and Dale Phelps. David Zeeck, well known in the region, is the   publisher of The News Tribune and Dale Phelps is the Executive Editor and Vice President for news.  The paper is now part of the McClatchy news empire. David and Dale gave a great presentation about fake news.  We learned that fake news is not a new phenomenon and that it has historical roots with the earliest examples coming from ancient Egyptian times.  They made the point that fake news is often directed against something and that it was prevalent in medieval times. George Orwell’s 1984 came to mind as they talked about fake news shaping people’s perceptions, influencing political discourse and obscuring the facts. With the advent of the information age and the acceleration of the internet, the barriers to entry into the media and news marketplace have essentially been broken down.  Today, anyone with an idea and a little experience can create a fake news site that appears real and carries a veneer of legitimacy.   The speakers pointed out the motivation for these sites is not about information and truth but about money.  Fake news can be very lucrative, earning the site its owners and creators hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. The way to counter fake news is to be an informed and engaged consumer of news.  Check “Politifact” which has an almanac of fake news sites.  Be skeptical of news headlines that contain the word “just.”  Gravitate towards the tried and true brands like the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the BBC  and of course The News Tribune. Dale and David then gave a fascinating look into the business of the news these days.  They showed us some of the metrics and the tools that they use to chart their success.  They pointed out that the news consumer has moved away from paper and is consuming news on line and that their revenue is driven by online advertising and readership. What sells in the news world (and drives revenue) are stories about crime, real time news, traffic and sports. President Mark thanked David and Dale for their educational program.

As Nick Frank, Moss Adams came forward to celebrate birthdays, President Mark highlighted the following anniversaries: Tasha Smith, Monique Nadeau, and Ed Ramos. Nick recognized Larry Ghilarducci, who joined us to celebrate his birthday.  Unable to join us for their birthday wishes were; Jan Brazzell, Van Sawin, and Dianne Stoehr.

President Mark asked us all to take a look at the sign-up forms on the tables for the EFN repacks in August and September.  A great event and way to meet and get to know fellow Rotarians. Diane Kelleher talked about Stuff the Bus.  Rotarians can bring school supplies to the next two meetings or make a small donation to the cause. This is a great way to help kids succeed in school by providing supplies to children whose families are struggling. You can volunteer to stuff the backpacks on August 23 at Mount Tahoma High School.  August 23rd is also the day that we will be helping to build 7 little libraries in the Shalishan Community. Susan Barbeau of the Literacy Committee asked for volunteers to help with this effort.
Carolyn Weyrick mentioned that she still needs volunteers for the Courage beer garden. This year Courage will run from  Aug. 26-27 and will stretch from Centralia to Eatonville. The ride will offer one-day routes of five, 30 or 50 miles and two-day options of 150 or 175 miles. Rotary will help staff the beer garden in Eatonville and we need volunteers to help. All to raise funds for Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital! Kirsten Willis talked about the foundation and our annual fund drive to support our work.  Every Rotarian should have received a donation request and form in the mail.  Help us exceed our goal!  This is an amazingly effective way to give back to your community and make a small difference in our world. (Note: This scribe and his wife have made their annual pledge and we ask you to join us in doing the same.  Consider increasing your gift by 10% this year.)
Debbie Regala from the programs committee pointed out that there are multi-hued 3 by 5 cards on the tables.  In two weeks, the two candidates for Mayor of Tacoma, Jim Merritt and Victoria Woodard will be speaking at our club meeting and Debbie asked that you submit your questions in advance to the candidates printed legibly on one of the cards. We want to host a civilized exchange of ideas and not devolve into partisan rancor.
Mark thanked our speakers, welcomed our newest member Karena Kirkendoll, thanked Kathryn Nelson for proposing her and announced the social at the Harmon at 5:00 pm, to support the Rotary Courage Riders.
Next week’s meeting will feature Lori Whaley a 3rd generation Japanese American and a descendant of the Samurai.  She is an inspirational speaker on a mission to make a difference in the world through the ancient principles of the Samurai Warrior.
As always Mark suggested that everyone go out and Live Rotary! The meeting adjourned.
