VOL. NINETY-FOUR, Issue No. 1

Elliot Stockstad

Tacoma-Pierce County Habitat for Humanity has served low-income families in our community since 1985.  The local office is one of 1,300 Habitat affiliates nationally, all with the same vision of a world where everyone has a safe, decent place to live.  Tacoma Habitat has evolved through the years, starting with a small group building 1 house every year or two, and are now developing full communities.  Additionally, TPC Habitat operates three retail stores (Tacoma, Lakewood and Puyallup) that sell new or used housing goods and construction supplies to help fund the mission.  Elliot will talk about Habitat’s local work, particularly in light of the emerging affordable housing crisis.
We will also have the pleasure of hearing from Jim Whitacre and our Projects Committee. We will receive some insight about the great way they do their work, providing each of us the opportunity to serve our community.

VEERLE                                         MIKULAS

2017-18 EXCHANGE STUDENT INFORMATION

Hello my name is Mikulas Rimanek and I am 15 years old. I live in Ostrava, Czech Republic. I am a Rotary Exchange student who has been assigned to come to beautiful Tacoma, Washington!

My parents, Tomas and Barbara Rimanek are very excited for me to meet my new host families for the 2017-18 school year at Stadium High School! I have a “very good” rating for my English studies and I speak German too. I have excellent ratings in all my classes. I like to balance my hobbies with my school studies. I love nature, birding and exploring the wild. I am very concerned about the protection of the environment. I think I will study biology and ornithology in university.

I am interested in meeting new people, get to know new places in the world. I am keenly interested in taking biology at Stadium to compare the differences there and in my school. I want to become familiar with organizations that are doing environmental protection operating in Tacoma that can be used in Czech Republic.

I love to eat and cook too!

Will you be my new host family?

Veerle Obdeijn from the Netherlands will be arriving in August  from the village of Markelo about 1.5 hrs outside of Amsterdam. Veerle is an avid horsewoman. She loves music and plays violin. In the summer, she joins her older brother in Friesland for sailing camp.

Veerle bikes to school. She is in secondary school in Holland. Her Dad works as a project manager with an environmental consultancy and her Mom runs an independent recreation business from home. She has an older brother and younger sister. Her parents report that she loves to sing and has a very even tempered personality. She is very responsible and has persisted through various childhood issues with early surgeries. She makes friends and is very gregarious.

Veerle is a well traveled teenager. She has visited European countries and South Africa where she hiked Table Mountain in Cape Town with her family and toured Kruger Park.  This will be her first visit to America.

Won’t you be one of her lucky host families?
10 Reasons to Host an Exchange Student
in the words of our host parents
  1. You can learn that country’s may be different (culture, food, art, politics), but we are also not that different (want peace, family issues are the same, people vacation and go to work like we do).
  2. Teenagers keep you young and you tend to go places and do things you wouldn’t normally.
  3. You get to know/see your city and state because you want to ensure they see it too. Great excuse!
  4. Hosting provides an invaluable international/cultural experience for your children without leaving home.
  5. Creates a lifetime friendship around the world, which inspires a never ending worldly perspective.
  6. The world gets a little smaller and better. We love our International kids!
  7. Your entire family has a mutually beneficial education experience.
  8. Your eyes are open to what the younger generation is thinking.  We were able to have tremendously insightful discussions with our student on the different views regarding culture, society, government, world history and even politics.
  9. You have the chance to learn or practice a foreign language.
  10.  You create a lifetime of memories, with someone who will always be in your heart.

Boring Bylaws?

Not on our watch!  We need your help as our ad hoc committee (a dedicated quartet of bylaw busting aspiring Rotary Super Hero wannabes) works to review and update the Tacoma #8 Bylaws.  Watch your email box or mailbox for the Rotary Bylaw Survey.  Please take the time to open and respond to the survey.  The mission of our ad hoc committee is to gather input from club members and recommend Bylaws updates to our Club Directors.  Any changes to the Bylaws will only be made by a vote of our Members.  We need your help to ensure that the governing documents of our Club reflect the needs of all our fellow Rotarians.  The text of our Club Bylaws can be found here

Reflections from the meeting of June 29 by Jamie Brooks

Today’s meeting was a celebration for outgoing President Becky Fontaine.
Malcolm Russell of the Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation was today’s meeting sponsor. He invited everyone to their 10 year celebration on September 17 at 5 pm at 820 Dock Street. There will be dinner and a silent auction.
Rusty Hersey, Superior Linen, gave the invocation. Steve Smith, Black Education Strategy Roundtable, led us in National Anthem and the 4 way test, accompanied by Barbara Mead, Moss Adams, on the piano.
Cards were circulated and signed for Jeff Albers, whose mother passed away this week and Bob Mallon who is dealing with health issues.
Jan Brazzell, Advancement Consulting and Jim Boardman, Office Technology Products, brought the mics to those who had guests and to visiting Rotarians.
Michelle Roberts, LeMay Mobile Shredding, celebrated Rick Olson’s birthday (6/28) and thanked him for everything he does for the club. Thank you Rick for sharing your birthday cupcakes with cheerful yellow frosting!
Happy Anniversary to Julie Foley (2 Years - June 25), Jeremy Fogelquist (3 years - June 26), Christian Anderson (4 years - June 27) and Jim Boardman (5 years - June 28)
Mark Anderson reminded members about ‘Rotary at the Rainiers’ on July 13 at 5:30. $18 includes the tailgate and admission.
President Becky listed some highlights from her year as president, including the Holocost Speaker, grant opportunities like reading and literacy, food and personal hygiene products to those in need, long (and short) board meetings, and a memorable blunder when she was congratulating Fred Moisio. Becky presented President Elect Mark Anderson with a Club President pin. Mark presented Immediate Past President Becky with a Past President pin and President Elect Linda Kaye Briggs with a President Elect pin. Mark thanked Becky for her dedication and hard work to our club and Rotary International and gave her the gift of floating, compliments of Jonathan Murray, Uncharted Waters, and a beautiful hardback Official Rotary Celebration Book inscribed by Rotary 8 past presidents.
Next was a special program by some talented Rotary Players: Elliot Stockstad, Rachel Cardwell, Maria Harlow, Linda Kaye Briggs, Kirsten Willis, Steve Smith, Rusty George, Missy Zenczak honoring Becky with awards including Best Female Performance in a Leading Role and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Elliot and Rachel treated us to two duets and Dawn Lucien and Jack Hamilton were honored and remembered during the ceremony.
Mark thanked our meeting sponsor Malcolm Russell, Tacoma Youth Marine Foundation. Next week’s meeting will feature leaders from within our own Club and how their organization transforms lives. We will also receive some insight about the great ways our Projects Committee does their work to give each of us the chance to serve our community. Mark unveiled his theme, Live Rotary, for the upcoming new Rotary year that calls on each of us to not just be members of Tacoma No. 8, but for each of us to truly be Rotarians. Mark charged everyone to Go forth and party (at Galleyside)
