VEERLE MIKULAS
2017-18 EXCHANGE STUDENT INFORMATION
Hello my name is Mikulas Rimanek and I am 15 years old. I live in Ostrava, Czech Republic. I am a Rotary Exchange student who has been assigned to come to beautiful Tacoma, Washington!
My parents, Tomas and Barbara Rimanek are very excited for me to meet my new host families for the 2017-18 school year at Stadium High School! I have a “very good” rating for my English studies and I speak German too. I have excellent ratings in all my classes. I like to balance my hobbies with my school studies. I love nature, birding and exploring the wild. I am very concerned about the protection of the environment. I think I will study biology and ornithology in university.
I am interested in meeting new people, get to know new places in the world. I am keenly interested in taking biology at Stadium to compare the differences there and in my school. I want to become familiar with organizations that are doing environmental protection operating in Tacoma that can be used in Czech Republic.
I love to eat and cook too!
Will you be my new host family?
Veerle Obdeijn from the Netherlands will be arriving in August from the village of Markelo about 1.5 hrs outside of Amsterdam. Veerle is an avid horsewoman. She loves music and plays violin. In the summer, she joins her older brother in Friesland for sailing camp.
Veerle bikes to school. She is in secondary school in Holland. Her Dad works as a project manager with an environmental consultancy and her Mom runs an independent recreation business from home. She has an older brother and younger sister. Her parents report that she loves to sing and has a very even tempered personality. She is very responsible and has persisted through various childhood issues with early surgeries. She makes friends and is very gregarious.
Veerle is a well traveled teenager. She has visited European countries and South Africa where she hiked Table Mountain in Cape Town with her family and toured Kruger Park. This will be her first visit to America.
Won’t you be one of her lucky host families?
10 Reasons to Host an Exchange Student
in the words of our host parents
You can learn that country’s may be different (culture, food, art, politics), but we are also not that different (want peace, family issues are the same, people vacation and go to work like we do).
Teenagers keep you young and you tend to go places and do things you wouldn’t normally.
You get to know/see your city and state because you want to ensure they see it too. Great excuse!
Hosting provides an invaluable international/cultural experience for your children without leaving home.
Creates a lifetime friendship around the world, which inspires a never ending worldly perspective.
The world gets a little smaller and better. We love our International kids!
Your entire family has a mutually beneficial education experience.
Your eyes are open to what the younger generation is thinking. We were able to have tremendously insightful discussions with our student on the different views regarding culture, society, government, world history and even politics.
You have the chance to learn or practice a foreign language.
You create a lifetime of memories, with someone who will always be in your heart.

Boring Bylaws?
Not on our watch! We need your help as our ad hoc committee (a dedicated quartet of bylaw busting aspiring Rotary Super Hero wannabes) works to review and update the Tacoma #8 Bylaws. Watch your email box or mailbox for the Rotary Bylaw Survey. Please take the time to open and respond to the survey. The mission of our ad hoc committee is to gather input from club members and recommend Bylaws updates to our Club Directors. Any changes to the Bylaws will only be made by a vote of our Members. We need your help to ensure that the governing documents of our Club reflect the needs of all our fellow Rotarians. The text of our Club Bylaws can be found here.

Reflections from the meeting of July 6 by Don Doman
President Mark Anderson rang the bell and called his first meeting as Tacoma Rotary President to order. He then thanked Fred Moisio and Jamie Will of Titus Will Ford for sponsoring our meeting. Next, blissfully retired Carol Webster provided an enthusiastic invocation. Next President Mark introduced Elliot Stockstad of Habitat for Humanity to lead us in the singing of our national anthem and the Four Way Test "a cappella," although Mark didn't understand how Elliot could lead us in the Four Way Test "a cappella."
Cards were circulated for Erica Doctor and Gordon Neu. Jeff Albers of Albers and Company and Greg Rolsma manned the hand-held microphones to help introduce visiting Rotarians, and Rotarian members with their guest.
President Mark announced a slight change in our meeting programs. For the first meeting each month, he wants to feature a different committee report instead of an outside speaker. By focusing on our committee work and the impact they deliver to our community, he hopes to double-down on enthusiasm and participation. Next he introduced Elliot Stockstad who showed how Habitat for Humanity is making Tacoma a better community by sharing home-ownership among more citizens. Far from giving away houses, he showed how Habitat for Humanity offers individual families a chance to buy into their new homes by agreeing to work significant hours, taking part to complete or support the construction. When you see the people speaking from their hearts about what those homes mean to them and their families, you know that the work of this organization and those who support it are on the right track in building a better neighborhood, a better city, and a better world.
Jim Whitacre spoke next about our Projects Committee, which takes ideas from our members and turns them into projects that help feed the hungry, and assist the homeless in their struggle to live and exist on their own.
Fred Moisio gave a minute’s worth of reasons to shop for an automobile at Titus Will Ford and then Marty Lough came forward and celebrated birthdays for Susan Barbeau and Maureen Fife who were present. He gave them each a million dollar bill. (Were they supposed to pay it?)
Kathryn Townsend from the Gig Harbor Mid-day Club made an announcement for their upcoming fundraiser and then Mark declined to collect fines except for Rotarians with a last name beginning with the letter "Q." Just as he announce that, Kelly Lane of Artistic Plastic Surgery had her phone ring. Mark jumped at the chance to earn $35 with one fine, but Kelly had a fine she wanted to pay and offered $100. I’m not sure how they worked it out, but I think Mark just settled for the $35, so we’ll have to wait until next week to find out what Kelly really wanted to pay for. Mark finished with a request for Exchange Student host families to come forth. We still need one more. Being a host family is fun and can be the start of a world-wide friendship that lasts a lifetime.
