Thursday, May 25, 2017 VOL. NINETY-THREE, Issue No. 46 Our Wonderful Exchange Students |
Enjoy the insight from these delightful students as they share what they have experienced during the last several months as they explored and learned about Tacoma. We have all enjoyed seeing them change, grow and develop as young adults. This is always one of the most inspirational programs of the year and may even bring a tear or two to our eyes. Louis will go back to Switzerland, in time for his Grandmother’s birthday, and go back to high school, because his year here and classes will not “count.” He even pushed himself and took A.P. Chemistry. He did take time to travel and help his ice hockey team have a great season. Ailsa’s sparkling personality was revealed to us as her English became more proficient and she performed in Stadium’s production of Hairspray, and she also highlighted her dancing talents at the District conference. Luis also enjoyed performing in Hairspray and will he will go back to Columbia and enter university to study architecture. This young gentleman was beloved by all the 5020 exchange students and fellow thespians at Stadium. Do you have a child or grandchild that might consider an exchange opportunity? This a great way to provide them with an idea of how lives are changed through the Youth Exchange Program. Invite them to join you this week. We will also be awarding scholarships to students from Wilson, Tacoma Baptist, Stadium, SOTA, SAMI, Oakland, Mt. Tahoma, Lincoln, Life Chrisitian, Bellarmine and Annie Wright. This will be be a week to celebrate!

The World's Greatest Meal Plan to End Polio |
Our speaker turned our luncheon into an opportunity to end polio, by challenging members to contribute and qualify for a 2 to 1 match from the Gates Foundation. Not surprisingly, Brien Elvins, led the way and many other generous members responded by raising over $2,400 which will translate into $7,200!! Many of our members have already pledged to Polio Plus through their Project Greater Good donation, but if you would still like to contribute just let us know. We are so close to ending this disease, with only 5 reported cases this year!

No rest for the Vocational Services Committee however, as they are already looking for members to sponsor our summer meetings. Now is your chance to help the club offset the cost of the speaker's meal, gift and other program expenses, by signing up for a meeting. Have your company’s name in lights and sign up today. Meeting Sponsor Cost: $100 per meeting. We are now allowing a 1 minute video in lieu of a slide and 1-2 minute presentation. To sponsor a meeting, contact Don Sheppard or the Rotary office.

Reflections from the meeting of May 18 by Jim Henderson |
President Becky Fontaine called the May 18 meeting of the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8 to order by ringing the bell at 12:12 pm and welcoming all. She thanked this week’s meeting sponsor, Don Sheppard, Salvation Army, and asked Don to do the invocation. Past President Pat Steel, Corporate Mystic led us in the national anthem and the Four Way test, and Jack Warnick played the piano. Get Well cards were being circulated for Past President Nita Sell, Miriam Barnett and Dawn Lucien. Visiting Rotarians and members with guests were asked to stand and introduce themselves as the mics were brought around by Peter Carlstrom, Homestreet Bank and Maria Harlow. Among the guests were visiting Rotarians from Tacoma Sunrise and Tacoma Narrows, and former Club President Denny Rowley. President Becky then called on Debbie Regala to introduce today’s speaker, Rotarian Susanne Rea who is a Polio Eradication Advocate. Susanne joined Rotary in Australia in 1994, and is herself a Polio survivor. She was recruited to the RI Foundation District Fundraising Team and over three years, her small Rotary district became the second largest donor to the Foundation in all of Australia. Her district in Australia is most of Queensland and the Northern Territory. She started a club project, which then became a district project and came up with the ‘World’s Greatest Meal’ name for it, and presented it at the 2014 International Convention in Sydney. She has made multiple presentations to District Conferences on what local Rotary Clubs can do to end Polio. She said we are very close to ending it, and each year shows a downward trend on doing that. She said that vaccination is the key to Polio eradication and has participated in numerous eradication efforts worldwide. She said malnutrition is also a barrier to eradication. She said there is an army of people helping to stamp out polio. She lauded the financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and urged our club members to be willing to donate $100 to help end Polio, and a number of members stood up saying they would do so. President Becky thanked Susanne for her comments, gave her the speaker thank you card, and presented her with a book which will be donated in her honor to a neighborhood little library. Meeting sponsor Don Sheppard came forward to say ‘Let’s Eradicate Polio’. This week’s anniversaries were: Chuck Heaton – 3 years; LaTasha Wortham – 6 years; Edwin Hill – 21 years; Steve Bader – 33 years; and Jeff Lyon – 34 years. Gil Quante, Greenhaven Interactive, came forward to help celebrate birthdays. Coming forward were our Exchange Student from Indonesia Ailsa, and Jake Fey, along with George Howe who were all asked a question but given little time to answer it. Also celebrating this week but not present was Tasha Smith. President Becky announced that at last week’s District Conference, our club’s Literacy Committee was recognized with a District award. We also are celebrating a total of 21 new members introduced into the club so far this Rotary year and received a recognition certificate for that as well. We were reminded to sign up for the June 8 offsite meeting at the Point Defiance Pagoda. Dues statements were being mailed out and members are asked to return them by June 19. There was time for True Confessions and a number of members came forward to ‘confess’ happenings: Peter Darling – a 5 week cruise, including 10 days on Malta; Clay Zhang for a trip to Taiwan; John West a week in Chelan and attending his granddaughter’s college graduation from WSU; Ann Voves spent three weeks in Africa; George Pilant was at a conference last week and visited with Past President Bill Baxter today; George Howe for lots of skiing; and our three Exchange Students – Ailsa the end of school almost here and no more performances of Hairspray; Louis attended a Stadium HS district soccer game; and Luis went to a Tacoma Rainiers game. President Becky then thanked our meeting sponsor and speaker, and said next week’s meeting will be awarding over $35,000 in scholarships to area high school students, and the always anticipated talks by our three inbound Exchange Students. We were reminded to ‘Explore’ and the meeting was adjourned at 1:12pm.
