Thursday, September 21, 2017 VOL. NINETY-FOUR, Issue No. 12 Get to Know Mik and Veerle |
Join us in the Grand Ballroom! We will be treated to this special annual program, as we welcome our 2 Inbound Exchange Students, Mikulas Riminek and Veerle Obdeijn, to Tacoma #8. We are sure to learn some things we don't know about the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, and why these great young people are devoting this important time of their lives to travel by immersing themselves in our culture. A special treat will be a presentation from Cassie McDonnell who spent last year in Indonesia.

September 30th we have a fantastic Rotary evening planned starting at 5:15 with a fun social at the highly popular Peaks and Pints - Taproom and Eatery in the Proctor District! Next we'll be attending Tacoma Little Theatre's production of "Rumors." It was Neil Simon's first farce . . . and reads like a classic Twilight Zone episode. "Rumors," is a madcap, slamming door farce set in a large home located just outside of New York in the year 1988. The characters are arriving as guests at a 10th Anniversary Dinner. The first couple to arrive discovers that one of their hosts (Charley) has apparently attempted suicide...unsuccessfully. Charley's wife, Myra, is nowhere to be found and neither are the servants. Through the course of the show, the audience never meets Charley or Myra. As more guests arrive, there are cover-ups, deceptions, mistaken identities, and a lot of huge laughs. Join us for the "Rumors" Social at Peaks and Pints - 5:15 pm on Saturday Evening, September 30th. Rotary members will receive a 10% Food Discount - "We're a mountain-themed tavern with tasty sandwiches, salads, appetizers and desserts." The address is 3816 North Proctor - (253) 328-5621 If you can't join us at the social, then curtain time is 7:30 pm at Tacoma Little Theatre, 210 North I St, Tacoma, WA 98403, (253) 272-2281. For tickets, send checks (only $15 per person, so bring a friends) to the Rotary Office, PO Box 1777, Tacoma, WA 98401 or call for credit card purchases 253-473-7723. You can also pay for the tickets at any upcoming meeting. Please, join us for a laugh filled evening on Saturday, September 30th!

Reflections from the meeting of 9-14 by Andrew Imholt |
Halfway through the middle of September 2017, we had a jam-packed and informative Tacoma #8 Rotary Club lunch meeting. With 6 other Pierce County Rotary Clubs looking on as well, our members watched as Mark Anderson, President rang the bell to start the meeting and he introduced Karen Orr, President of Tacoma Sunset who provided a thoughtful Invocation. Linn Larsen, Larsen Commercial-Industrial Realtors lead the group in not one, but two National Anthems; the US and Canadian, accompanied by Past President Steve Smith on piano. Chris Serface, Tacoma Little Theatre was introduced as the day’s generous meeting sponsor and Paul Kuhn, President of Tacoma North lead us proudly through the 4-Way Test. Stephanie Schramm, President of the Passport Club introduced the club presidents for Tacoma North, Tacoma South, Sunrise, Sunset and Narrows Clubs. District Governor Tom Carroll and his wife Laurie were introduced as members of the Gateway Club. Jim Harris was introduced as a past District Governor in attendance. Shout-out to Pete Taylor and Arvind Phukan who are also Past District Governors. We watched Jeff Albers and Kirsten Willis serpentine between tables to deliver mics to visiting Rotarians and Rotarians with guests. Next-up was the introductions of the assistant Governors; Jennifer Durham and Howard Svigals. Jennifer presented a video featuring District Governor Tom Carroll inviting all to join at this year’s district conference at the Hotel Murano on May 4th and 5th, 2018. Jennifer introduced our guest presenter, District Governor Tom Carroll who gave a very layered presentation. Tom encouraged the group to “say yes” the next time somebody asks you to “step-up”. By doing so, Tom suggested that this would make you a true Rotarian by getting involved. By getting more involved, the more rewarding our lives would be. Tom also discussed attracting more diverse members to the club, as well as what Rotary’s next initiative would be after polio is eradicated. Tom also reminded all to attend this year’s district conference and to act quickly as it has sold out the past two years! Richard Corak President of Tacoma Sunrise thanked Tom for the presentation and opened up the floor for the visiting clubs to announce upcoming events. Meeting Sponsor Chris Serface, Tacoma Little Theatre was up next and gave a swift run though of the theatre's operations and upcoming shows. Linda Kay Briggs provided a fun Rotarian recognition presentation that narrowed down the newest and most tenured members in the audience. Our own members, Joe Gordon Jr. and Lori Harnick were recognized. Great participation from all! Paul Harris fellows were recognized before Mark thanked District Governor, Tom Carroll, his wife Laurie, Jennifer Durham, Howard Svigals, Club Presidents, visiting Rotarians and guests for joining with us today. He reminded us to come to the meeting next week featuring Rotary Youth Exchange Students.
