VOL. NINETY-FOUR, Issue No.7

       Jim Merritt and Victoria Woodards

Join us this week to hear from our two candidates for Mayor.  It is sure to be an insightful program!

From the Campaign website of Jim Merritt

As a leader in the private sector, father, and grandfather from Tacoma, I know there is a lot to be proud of in this city. I have spent my entire career making Tacoma an exceptional city to live, work and raise a family. My leadership made Point Ruston, the Foss Waterway, and Tacoma Union Station possible, providing opportunity for family-wage jobs and preserving local landmarks.

Tacoma still has incredible untapped potential. If we maximize our competitive advantage, we can become the economic engine for all of Southwest Washington and the Olympic Peninsula. As Mayor, I can realize this longterm vision for Tacoma that includes attracting family-wage jobs, restoring funding to public safety, and finally listening to the voices of our citizens.

I am running for Mayor to change the culture of our local government. Tacoma should work with its citizens, not against them. Tacoma should listen to taxpayers, not special interests. Voting for me as Mayor of Tacoma isn’t a vote for an agenda- it’s a vote for a seat at the table.

From the Campaign website of Victoria Woodards

Victoria Woodards has been proud to call Tacoma the “City of Destiny” her home for nearly her entire life. She is a product of the Tacoma Public School District and a proud graduate of Lincoln High School. In addition to being a US Army Veteran, she has worked in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

For over three decades, Victoria has served as a passionate leader in our community in many ways. Some of those include former chair of the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs, Trustee for the Washington State History Museum, Co-Chair of the Tacoma Civil Rights Project, Senior Fellow in the American Leadership forum and Producer of the region’s largest celebration of diversity “Ethnic Fest.”

While Victoria has always had a desire to serve and work in her community, it was while working for Harold Moss on the Pierce County Council that she discovered her desire to serve in elected office. In May of 2004, she was appointed to the Board of Park Commissioners and subsequently elected in November 2005. She served as President of the Metro Parks Board until 2009 when she was elected to the Tacoma City Council.

As a member of the City Council, Victoria worked tirelessly to make Tacoma the best place to live, work and play.   She was Deputy Mayor in 2014 and during her tenure as a councilmember served in several capacities including chair of the Tacoma-Pierce County Board of Health, Community Vitality and Safety Committee and the Gang Reduction Task Force.  She was also on the boards of the Foundation for Tacoma Students (Graduate Tacoma) and the Crystal Judson Family Justice Center.

Reflections from the meeting of August 10 by Libby Catalinich

Before President Mark rang the bell, Past President and Past District Governor, Jim Harris came forward to present a eulogy for Bob Mallon. Following his remarks, President Mark Anderson called the meeting to order. Stephen Deal from United Way provided the invocation.  Ali Criss from Financial Insights led us in a lovely version of the National Anthem in an acapella version since the piano was AWOL.  She followed up with the Four Way Test. Jeremy Fogelquist of Johnson Stone Pagano was the meeting sponsor, but was unable to attend, so deferred his time to the already packed meeting schedule. Cards with wishes for speedy recoveries were circulated for Mary McNally and Bill Baxter, who had surgery.   Fr. Peter Henriot, cousin of Bob Mallon, accepted the Club’s condolences on the passing of our beloved long-time member.
A visiting Rotarian from Des Moines, Iowa was introduced and a number of guests were welcomed.  Mark Starnes introduced the new CEO of the Boys and Girls Club as he is retiring from the position.
Debbie Regala, past service, introduced the meeting’s speaker, Lori Tsugawa Whaley, author of The Courage of a Samurai: Seven Sword-Sharp Principles for Success.  She spoke about the Japanese internment camps created by Executive Order 9066 during World War II, including Camp Harmony on the Puyallup Fairgrounds.  The 75th Anniversary of the camp will be acknowledged in an upcoming event.
Club anniversaries were acknowledged: Anita Eixenberger, Joan Engle, Lori Bemis, Barbara Mead and Larry Treleven.  Birthday celebrants were largely absent but birthday boy Stephen Deal was asked how he happened to join the Club.  He reported that the inimitable Linda Kaye Briggs invited him and he couldn’t turn her down.
The following announcements were made:
President Mark reminded members the August 31 meeting will be offsite at CI Shenanigan’s.  Members must make a reservation for that meeting.  Kathleen Olson announced EFN repacks in August and September. Diane Kelleher reminded the Club that Stuff the Bus is underway to support 4000 Tacoma School District students.  August 23rd is the date to stuff the backpacks at Mt. Tahoma.  Susan Barbeau announced a Little Library build will be held on August 23 from 3 – 6.  Members were encouraged to help Stuff the Bus and then build a Library!
Carolyn Weyrick and Cindy Niemi encouraged members to sponsor Club riders in the Courage ride and sign up to serve beer to thirsty riders at the Eatonville stop at Pack Forest on August 26.  Donations can be made at Ridewithcourage.org.   Debbie Regala announced that the meeting on 8-17 will feature mayoral candidates and asked members to submit questions for the candidates.
True Confessions were disclosed:  Diane Tilstra announced that the Youth Exchange students will be arriving soon; Jim Fry says he looks forward to getting “TSA groped” when he travels given his new metal knee; Olivia Hale, a former outbound exchange student, inspired the group with her accomplishments since her 2009 – 2010 year abroad.  She was a Fulbright Scholar to Cologne, Germany and will be earning her MSC in Educational Research at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. John Schneider returned from a family reunion. Robin Echtle completed a medical triage exercise at JBLM. Fred Moisio offered a reflection on the life and legacy of Bob Mallon.  Fred met him as a Rotary Senior Boy of the Month while a student at Mt. Tahoma. He decided at that point he wanted to be a member like Bob.  Jan Brazzell returned from traveling in Alabama, where she claims she gained 8 lbs!  She paid her birthday fine.  Bryan Flint acknowledged his first meeting as a Rotary 8 board member.
President Mark announced his intention to begin meetings sharply at noon and conclude at 1:00.  He asked for members’ support and cooperation to begin and end in a timely manner. Before adjourning the meeting, he encouraged members to attend the social that night at Chambers Bay and to go out and Live Rotary.
