Congressman Dicks also became the chair of the Defense Appropriations Committee, and concluded his tenure in Congress as top-ranking Democratic Member on the Defense Appropriations Committee, and top-ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee. From 1990 to 1998, Congressman Dicks served on the House Intelligence Committee and was awarded the CIA Directors Medal. Upon his retirement, Norm received the Department of Defense’s Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon a civilian for his work on behalf of military members and their families.

HIGHLIGHTING YOUR BUSINESS
It looks like we have meeting sponsors covered for the remainder of the Rotary year. Special thanks to all of our wonderful members who supported the club in this way. No rest for the Vocational Services Committee however, as they are already looking for members to sponsor our summer meetings. Now is your chance to help the club offset the cost of the speaker's meal, gift and other program expenses, by signing up for a meeting. Have your company’s name in lights and sign up today. Meeting Sponsor Cost: $100 per meeting. We are now allowing a 1 minute video in lieu of a slide and 1-2 minute presentation. To sponsor a meeting, contact Don Sheppard or the Rotary office.

Reflections from the meeting of May 25 by Jeff Rounce |
When President Becky Fontaine rang the bell to commence this meeting, it seemed that club members were out-numbered by guests — and the median age of the crowd was certainly much lower than on a typical Thursday. This was the annual recognition of graduating high school seniors who were to receive their scholarship awards from Rotary Club of Tacoma, and most of the 21 recipients were attending, along with high school counsellors, fellow students and many proud (and grateful) parents. Our program speakers also continued the “youthful” theme as the three wonderful Rotary Exchange students soon to complete their year’s affiliation with our club presented their out-going remarks. First, though, Jamie Brooks of Brooks Dental delivered a meaningful recitation of “12 Important Keys to Happiness” as a thoughtful moment/invocation. With piano accompaniment from Pierce County spokeswoman Libby Catalinich, Chris Serface of Tacoma Little Theatre directed a rendering of the National Anthem. Stephanie Farrar from Ten Capital and Harrison Laird, CBRE commercial real estate, attended to the public announcements for our guests and visiting Rotarians. President Becky brought Bob Fredrickson forward as the chair of the Club’s Scholarship Committee to introduce 19 remarkable young students from 12 Tacoma-area high schools who had been chosen to each receive his or her share of $35,500 in total grants this year. Someone noted that there were only four young men within the vast ranks of scholarship recipients. “Phenomenal GPAs,” “outstanding community service,” “varied career paths plotted” and an overall “good understanding of what it takes to be successful” were descriptors often used by Bob as he shared the backgrounds of all these students. He encouraged them all to “stay in touch with Rotary” and Rotaract as they journey forth in college and beyond, for they will find kindred spirits and ambitions among members of any Rotary Club they might affiliate with in the future. The guest speakers portion of the meeting followed, as President Becky introduced Louis Blindenbacher from Switzerland, who recalled the many local visitor attractions that he enjoyed during his school year in Tacoma. He also had opportunities to see much of the rest of Washington State, as his select hockey team traveled extensively for games and tournaments. A successful student at Stadium High School, he nevertheless shared a Will Smith quote: “The things that are most valuable to me, I did not learn in school. It is over-rated, but something you have to do.” Louis will be returning home soon to take his junior year of high school, since the classroom learning from Tacoma does not count in his academic program. But oh, the things he has learned while amongst us. Ailsa Bitha Nalaarni, our 2016-17 exchange student from Indonesia, recalled doing lots of traveling during her year with us and says she is still learning how to ice skate, though proficiency in snow skiing is an accomplishment for this young lady whose home sees neither ice nor snow. “Hairspray the Musical” was a highlight for her, representing her American stage debut. Reflecting on a remarkable RYE experience, Ailsa shared this quote: “When people start to make little changes in themselves, they begin to change the world.” And that is totally consistent with Rotarians’ belief in the value of the youth exchange programs. Luis Rico will soon be returning to his home and family in Colombia with memories of “dreams come true” during his time with our Club. “There are lots of things that I’m never going forget,” he shared. The year was not always easy, but he found lots of help from his Youth Exchange counsellors and others in the membership to fix problems as they arose. “I learned a lot about myself,” Luis said. “This is one of the best years of my life.” Meeting Sponsor Jamie Brooks tendered her sponsorship moment to Kirsten Willis, who spoke on behalf of The Humane Society for Pierce County and its upcoming fund-raising event. Malcolm Russell, Tacoma Youth Marine Center, celebrated birthdays, though only two Rotarians attended to observe their days: President Becky and Alex Trettin. Likewise, members on the list to note their club anniversaries were mostly elsewhere in celebration. Jan Schwenger has checked in to Facebook from Moldova this week and Mike Dunbar is visiting family in London. The other anniversary of note is for Dawn Lucien, who is still trying to see her way clear to get to a meeting. President Becky noted some Club administrative announcements, including the results of the prior week’s spontaneous fund-raiser for Polio Plus, which added $2,400 from #8 members, matched by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a $7,200 influx to the global Rotary effort to end polio. Dues notices for the coming year have been mailed out with payment on them (and, optionally, a Pre-Paid Meal Plan choice) due to the office by June 19. Various members shared tales of travels, travails overcome and global water projects completed during True Confessions prior to the adjournment bell. Another successful meeting recorded to history for the quickly passing Rotary year of President Becky.
