September 30th we have a fantastic Rotary evening planned starting at 5:15 with a fun social at the highly popular Peaks and Pints - Taproom and Eatery in the Proctor District! Next we'll be attending Tacoma Little Theatre's production of "Rumors." It was Neil Simon's first farce . . . and reads like a classic Twilight Zone episode. "Rumors," is a madcap, slamming door farce set in a large home located just outside of New York in the year 1988. The characters are arriving as guests at a 10th Anniversary Dinner. The first couple to arrive discovers that one of their hosts (Charley) has apparently attempted suicide...unsuccessfully. Charley's wife, Myra, is nowhere to be found and neither are the servants. Through the course of the show, the audience never meets Charley or Myra. As more guests arrive, there are cover-ups, deceptions, mistaken identities, and a lot of huge laughs. Join us for the "Rumors" Social at Peaks and Pints - 5:15 pm on Saturday Evening, September 30th. Rotary members will receive a 10% Food Discount - "We're a mountain-themed tavern with tasty sandwiches, salads, appetizers and desserts." The address is 3816 North Proctor - (253) 328-5621 If you can't join us at the social, then curtain time is 7:30 pm at Tacoma Little Theatre, 210 North I St, Tacoma, WA 98403, (253) 272-2281. For tickets, send checks (only $15 per person, so bring a friends) to the Rotary Office, PO Box 1777, Tacoma, WA 98401 or call for credit card purchases 253-473-7723. You can also pay for the tickets at any upcoming meeting. Please, join us for a laugh filled evening on Saturday, September 30th!

Rusty George Reports on the August 31 Meeting |
Serious Shenanigans happened on the Last Day of Summer An eye-witness account of The Tacoma 8 Rotary Club lunch meeting Taking in the pleasant view of Commencement Bay from the Explorer Room in C.I. Shenanigans, the club appreciated a thoughtful reminder from Kim Bedier to respect water and the victims in Houston, and then enjoyed a rousing and patriotic Star-Spangled Banner belted out by Chris Serface of Tacoma Little Theatre. Stephanie Farrar of Ten Capital helped introduce visiting Rotarians and guests of Rotarians, including newly-arrived exchange students as well as a few who just came back from their adventures abroad. A happy welcome to one and all. President Mark invited Alex Trettin of Travel Leaders to introduce our guest presenters: Bonnie Becker, Associate Professor of Marine Ecology at the University of Washington Tacoma, Nathalie Hamel from the Puget Sound Partnership, as well as Sherrie Duncan, owner of Sky Environmental, specializing in natural resource management and conservation. With the perfect watery setting as a backdrop, the three reported on the local area’s health as it pertains to invertebrates (like crab and octopi), fish (did you know that the state fish is the bull trout?) and mammals and birds. The most encouraging item of the talk is the revelation that grey and humpback whales, orcas and porpoises are making a comeback in numbers regionally in the last 20 years. The best piece of advice is to forego washing your car on the street and take it to a car wash that has been developed to capture and recycle waste water. President Mark wanted the trio to keep talking about the environment but he didn’t want to be shellfish about the time. No, you didn’t have to be there. It wasn’t funny at the time either. Past President Becky Fontaine, our meeting sponsor, talked about the magnitude of Hurricane Harvey and the devastation the Red Cross is tackling at the moment. She asked us to watch who we donate to and with all the scams taking advantage of the situation, to use the recognizable organizations you trust. Donating does more that addressing the current situation but helps them stock resources to be prepared for the next disaster that will inevitably come. Kathleen Olson recognized birthday Rotarians, especially the lovely Cindy Niemi who was proud to report her team raised over $38,000 for the Courage ride last weekend. You can still contribute to her team at ridewithcourage.org. Happy Birthday and good job Cindy and team. Speaking of the Courage ride, Carolyn Weyrick also reported on the beer garden’s success at the event. Sounds like they had a blast. Kirsten Willis held a drawing for all our members who have signed up for Project Greater Good. The winner of two Mariners Tickets for the game on September 10 against the LA Angels was Pamela Transue. Congrats Pamela and have a great time. Some true confessions included Gil Quante and Whitney Grisaffi celebrating anniversaries (not to each other), Marsha Burns taking a ride on Bob Fredricksen’s boat around the sound, Becky Fontaine heading to Texas in the fall, Libby Catalinich helping lay unclaimed people to rest with the Pierce County Medical Examiner, Chris Serface helping Tacoma Little Theatre own its own building, Skye Lanz returning from Japan after one year as an exchange student, stud girl Ali Criss preparing to break a skydiving record, and Barry Benson announcing he and his wife Sharon being voted best of the South Sound by Showcase Magazine. Good on ya! Also, let it be known that the EFN repack is going to be on September 9th so sign up now and we will see you there. After a rousing meeting and delicious food, President Mark closed the meeting and invited everyone to stick around and chat. Some did, some didn’t. All left satisfied and with a twinkle in the eye.
