1,000 TOWELS HELPING OUR COMMUNITY Our projects committee finished up delivering all of the towels last week. Huge thanks to Ann Voves, Gil Quante, Jim Whitacre and Rusty Hersey. The team, along with some other wonderful volunteers delivered towels to the YWCA, TreeHouse, Tacoma Rescue Mission, Salvation Army and HopeSparks. Below are a couple of thank you's that we received. THANK YOU so much for dropping off towels to HopeSparks and our HopesCloset yesterday! Tacoma #8 rocks and Rotarians are amazing people with hearts of gold!!!! Thank you for the donation – we are grateful for Tacoma Rotary’s support. You never know how much you need a towel until you don’t have one. Our domestic violence shelter was totally out of towels when Tacoma Rotary 8 showed up. Thank you for keeping our clients dry when they step out of the shower or bath! You have made them so happy!

We have a number of members who have had recent surgeries or are home bound with chronic illnesses. We heard last week that Nancy Davis, who is on regular dialysis, would welcome calls and even visitors on Tuesdays or Thursdays. She can be reached at 253-474-9215. I have checked in with some other members, and they are grateful for cards, but do not want calls or visits. If you are home and unable to attend meetings and would like to hear from your friends in the club please call (253-473-7723) or email the office clubadmin@rotary8.org. On that note, it would be great to have a Sunshine Committee who could maintain contact with missing members. Do you have an interest in taking that on?

The Little Free Libraries are decorated and ready for finishing work. They are now in the Rotary office, awaiting installation of doors and shelving. We had to cancel the installation last week and the Literacy Committee is assigning one team captain to finish each library, gather a team and manage the installation. Thanks to Rusty Hersey, Gil Quante, John Schneider, Sherri Stanton and Carol Webster (and Chris) who will help lead teams. Please contact Susan Barbeau if you would like to lend a hand.

Annual Meal Adjustment Coming Beginning on November 2, our meal price will go from $21.00 to $21.50 per meal. As many of you know, this price increase is driven by our contract with the Landmark to provide meals and meeting space, which includes an automatic annual increase in meal price. Looking “under the hood” of our contract with the Landmark, our Club has an obligation to purchase an average of 115 meals a week. Thus, whenever one of us opts out of lunch or misses a meeting altogether, it costs our Club money – and that has too often been the case. Our averages in July, August and September are trending in the right direction 75, 86, 101 but are still well below the 115 requirement; the Club has paid over $7,000 for members who do not attend our meetings or opt not to eat lunch– that is certainly not fair to all concerned. If you were on vacation or unavoidably absent, consider making a True Confession and paying a fine to cover some of those lunches you missed! How can you do your part in fixing this (besides just showing up)? Be a hero and bring a guest or two (or more) to lunch. Through your involvement, these guests have a chance to experience our great Club, to see what Rotary is all about, and to be treated to outstanding programs that are hard to find anywhere else. We have other lunch meeting heroes among us, those members who opt to purchase the pre-paid meal plan. If you are a member with good attendance (and why wouldn’t you be?), this is a great way to get a discount on the price per lunch, avoid lines, and help our Club. Please see Joy or Kathi to sign up.

Reflections from the Meeting of October 5 by Carol Duris |
President Mark Anderson rang the bell to bring the October 5th meeting to order. Cynthia Darland, provided a beautiful and touching invocation, followed by Past President Pat Steel, who led us in the National Anthem followed by the 4-way Test. The Meeting Sponsor was announced, also Past President Pat Steel who ceded his time to ED, Miriam Barnett of the YWCA who shared information about Domestic Violence Month. Whitney Grisaffi, Ted Brown Music and Linda Kaye Briggs, the Briggs brought around mics to Visiting Rotarians and Guests of Tacoma #8 members. Mike Dunbar and Harrison Laird came forward to help lead the group in a table activity. The question to each of the tables was, who would the group like to have as future speakers. Each table came up with great ideas, some more than 1! All of these ideas were recorded by Jim Henderson and will be passed along to the Program Committee. Thank you for all who participated. President Mark then introduced our speaker, Assistant Governor, Howard Svigals. Howard provided a wealth of information on Rotary Internationals main Foundations. The Rotary Foundation is incredibly well rated as a non-profit from numerous and respected outside rating agencies. Our foundation is what makes Rotary unique in comparison to other service clubs. Contributions go to improving lives around the world. Our foundation can multiply club funds by matching grants. 20 grants are funded each week with 1,000 funded each year. Grants are $30,000 to as high as $200,000. The foundation is broken into three specific pillars to which individuals across the world support and fund: 1.Polio Plus – These funds are specifically and exclusively utilized to rid the world of Polio 2.The Endowment – The base of these funds are never spent, but the interest is utilized to support the match funding for projects across the world. 3.Annual Fund – Typically this receives $110-130 MM in funding each year with the gifts spent each year and the interest derived added funding source for matching gifts. After Assistant District Govenor Svigals provided insights, Kirsten Willis presented our clubs most recent Paul Harris awardees and gave us a quick over view of our club’s Tacoma Rotary Foundation and Project Greater Good. Paul Harris awardees included a first time awardee as well as an 8th time awardee, thank you all for your amazing commitment to our club! President Mark then called for nominations for the 2 Nominating Committees which included 4 names for the Officer Nominating Committee and 6 names for the Board Nominating Committee. Stephanie Farrar, Ten Capital helped us celebrate one birthday person in attendance, Scott Winship unable to join us were Carolyn Weyrick, Jeff Lyon Conor McCarthy and Lee Gingrich. Club anniversaries included Cathy Hall and Rusty Hersey. President Mark thanked our speakers, sponsor and announced our social which was as The Spar. Next week’s meeting we will host the 6 candidates for the Port of Tacoma Commissioner positions. Now go out and Live Rotary! Meeting adjourned.
