VOL. NINETY-THREE, Issue No. 48

Waterfront Phase 1

Roger Stanton is the project manager for what Metro Parks calls Waterfront Phase I, which is the huge, multifaceted park development work by the entrance to Point Defiance Park. The project involves working with the EPA to transform Asarco's old slag peninsula into a waterfront park, build a trail that connects the Ruston Way parks to Point Defiance, build a pedestrian bridge that will feature amazing views, expand parking for boat trailers using the marina, and enhance the entrance to the park.

HIGHLIGHTING YOUR BUSINESS

It looks like we have meeting sponsors covered for the remainder of the Rotary year. Special thanks to all of our wonderful members who supported the club in this way.  No rest for the Vocational Services Committee however, as they are already looking for members to sponsor our summer meetings.  Now is your chance to help the club offset the cost of the speaker's meal, gift and other program expenses, by signing up for a meeting.  Have your company’s name in lights and sign up today.

Meeting Sponsor Cost:  $100 per meeting.  We are now allowing a 1 minute video in lieu of a slide and 1-2 minute presentation.

To sponsor a meeting, contact Don Sheppard or the Rotary office.

Reflections from the meeting of June 1 by Kirsten Willis

At 12:13pm President Becky rang the bell to officially begin the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8 June 1st meeting, sponsored by Dean Curry, Life Center.

The Nation Anthem and Four-Way Test was brought to us by Elliot Stockstad, Habitat for Humanity, and accompanied by Jack Warnick, Piano Man.
Christina Turner, Multicare Foundation, and Jan Brazzell, Advancement Consulting, brought the microphones around to introduce visitors at the meeting. It was great to see so many guests at the lunch for our speaker!

Dawn Lucien, introduced the program speaker, Former Congressman Norm Dicks. He discussed his ties with Tacoma; including renovation of the Pantages Theatre, fixing the Tacoma spur, transforming Union Station as a Federal Courthouse and his leadership in cleaning up Commencement Bay. As for our national political climate, Norm shared that the investigation into Russian involvement with the 2016 Election is an extremely serious situation. He hopes the special investigator, Robert Mueller, will be able to do his job so that the House and Senate can get back to work! Former Congressman Dicks spoke to the importance of preventing this type of influence in the future. He also discussed the top items on his agenda for current congressmen Derek Kilmer and Denny Heck. Locally, it is the cleanup of the Puget Sound from storm water runoff. Nationally, climate change and cyber-security are the two most important issues to tackle now.

President Becky thanked Norm and will be donating a book to a Little Free Library in our community for his speaker’s gift. Next our meeting sponsor, Dean Curry, Life Center told the audience about the upcoming Hope253 event on August 13th at the Tacoma Dome. Over 200 churches participate in the event which brings hope and encouragement to the 253!
Mark Starnes, Boys and Girls Club, told the audience about how our Rotary Club helped replace the field trip vans for the kids at the club. Using donations from the Raise the Paddle at the 2016 Imagine Auction (I think I helped with that event😊) our Rotary Club in partnership with Tacoma South replaced two Boys and Girls Club vans and the kids got to go on a fishing trip for the first ride! President Becky, then followed-up with an update on other projects that 2016 Raise the Paddle helped support:
Tacoma Sunrise - $7,000 for winter hats, gloves and coats for 500 low income children, plus a visit with Santa and a hearty breakfast
Sparks – $12,000 to a Greater Tacoma Community Foundation initiative
Rotary 8 Scholarships Committee - $8,000
Rotary 8 Grants Committee - $10,000
Move that Bus – $3,000; this is a district project to move a bus full of medical supplies to a city outside of Puerto Vallarta.
Currently there is a balance of about $3,900 with two more small projects in the works. And on the 22nd of June we will hear more about the funds from Raise the Paddle from the Tacomi Vice Auction.

Next, President Becky announced the Anniversaries: Naomi Villano - 7 Years cumulative; Gil Quante - 16 years cumulative; Richard Jamison - 27 years; and John C. Dimmer, 56 YEARS!!!
Stephanie Farrar, Ten Capital, celebrated birthdays with Roger Lilley, Enid Harris and Jim Whitacre who stood in for Amanda Savage. Roger and Enid both shared stories about their favorite birthday celebration!

Announcements included a reminder that the meeting next week is offsite at the Point Defiance Pagoda with Roger Stanton as the speaker. President Elect Mark Anderson will be presiding. PE Mark also announced the July 13th Rotary Night at the Rainiers Game event. Last, but never least, Maria Harlow announced sign-ups for Galleyside are taking place now for the June 29th excursion.

President Becky thanked our meeting sponsor Dean Curry, Life Center, and reminded everyone about the evening social.

President Becky rang the bell and we were all reminded to Explore Rotary!
