VOL. NINETY-FOUR, Issue No. 3

Laurie Jinkins and Jake Fey
A Day in the Life - Behind the Scenes as a Lawmaker

Jake Fey was born and raised in Port Angeles, and his  experience in the YMCA Youth and Government program pointed him early on toward a life of public service. He was the first in his family to attend college, earning a BA in political science from the University of Washington and then an MPA from the University of Puget Sound.

His leadership skills have been established in managing an alternative-energy and energy-efficiency program with Washington State University, coordinating community-volunteer efforts on the Sound Transit and Pierce Transit Boards, and working on the Pierce County Public Health Board. He has also served as vice chair of the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, and as Tacoma’s deputy mayor.

Laurie Jinkins represents the 27th Legislative District in Pierce County, which includes East, Downtown, Hilltop, North, Northeast, West, and part of South Tacoma as well as Ruston and Fife Heights.
She is a native Midwesterner who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and later a Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law (then the University of Puget Sound School Of Law). Jinkins also completed executive studies at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
Jinkins started her career litigating child abuse and neglect cases for the state Attorney General’s Office. She then shifted her career toward public health, eventually serving as an assistant secretary of health at the state Department of Health before taking the position of Director of Organizational Initiatives at the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, where she continues to serve.
Jinkins serves on the Appropriations and Health Care and Wellness committees, and chairs the Judiciary Committee. Her legislative priorities include improving our schools and health care, helping working families and transforming Washington’s revenue structure.
Jinkins lives in Tacoma with her wife, Laura Wulf, and their 16-year-old son.

Get the inside scoop from Jake and Laurie and learn about life as a lawmaker!

Welcome to Returning Member Bruce Dammeier

Bruce was introduced by Libby Catalinich.  His sponsor is  Larry Treleven, but Libby stepped in because she knows Bruce well.
BRING A FRIEND TO THE MEETING THIS WEEK!

You won't want to miss this meeting! We will be hearing from State Representatives Jake Fey and Laurie Jinkins, who will share “A Day in the Life - Behind the Scenes as a Lawmaker.”   We will also be introducing Bruce Dammeier, the Pierce County Executive, as the newest member of our club.

It would be great to have a theatre full with folks ready to enjoy an insightful program.  To that end, here is an opportunity for you!  If you bring a paid guest with you this week,  we will give them a voucher to attend a future lunch meeting for free!  Yes, FREE!  Such a deal: you treat a friend to a great program … and offer them the opportunity to get to know Rotary a little better by joining us gratis at a future meeting of their choice.

Remember to take the time this summer to Live! Rotary.

You can almost see Libby Catalinich and Clay Zhang, but those are definitely his girls in the front row!

Rotary at the Rainiers on July 13...Okay so most of us were in the back row, but that is always where the cool kids hang out!

We had a great group of members (with their family and friends)  who joined with other Pierce County Rotarians for the great American pastime and good fellowship.   Thanks to the following members; Mark Anderson, Jim Boardman, Libby Catalinich, Julie Foley, Maria Harlow, Diane Kelleher, Kelly Lane, Marty Lough, Jeff Lovely, Jonathan Murray, Larry Norvell, Kathleen & Rick Olson,  Gil Quante, Christina Turner, Jack Warnick, Missy Zenczak and Clay Zhang.

FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER ANNUAL BARBECUE

We are still looking for a couple more volunteers to help at the lunch for staff at the center, this Friday July 21 from 11-2.  The meal will be provided by Famous Dave's, but we need help with a few more friendly servers.  It's going to be a wonderful day to give back to those providing services to our most vulnerable citizens. Please contact Jim Whitacre or Gil Quante if you are able to help.

QUARTERLY DRIVE

This week you will see small bins on the tables for our first quarterly drive. We are collecting money for towels that will be distributed to the Rescue Mission, Salvation Army, YWCA, Hope Sparks and Treehouse.  Thanks to Ann Voves and Rusty Hersey  for their work in kicking this off, as well as the generous members who already responded when Jim Whitacre announced the project on July 6.
VEERLE                                         MIKULAS

2017-18 EXCHANGE STUDENT INFORMATION

Hello my name is Mikulas Rimanek and I am 15 years old. I live in Ostrava, Czech Republic. I am a Rotary Exchange student who has been assigned to come to beautiful Tacoma, Washington!

My parents, Tomas and Barbara Rimanek are very excited for me to meet my new host families for the 2017-18 school year at Stadium High School! I have a “very good” rating for my English studies and I speak German too. I have excellent ratings in all my classes. I like to balance my hobbies with my school studies. I love nature, birding and exploring the wild. I am very concerned about the protection of the environment. I think I will study biology and ornithology in university.

I am interested in meeting new people, get to know new places in the world. I am keenly interested in taking biology at Stadium to compare the differences there and in my school. I want to become familiar with organizations that are doing environmental protection operating in Tacoma that can be used in Czech Republic.

I love to eat and cook too!

Will you be my new host family?

Veerle Obdeijn from the Netherlands will be arriving in August  from the village of Markelo about 1.5 hrs outside of Amsterdam. Veerle is an avid horsewoman. She loves music and plays violin. In the summer, she joins her older brother in Friesland for sailing camp.

Veerle bikes to school. She is in secondary school in Holland. Her Dad works as a project manager with an environmental consultancy and her Mom runs an independent recreation business from home. She has an older brother and younger sister. Her parents report that she loves to sing and has a very even tempered personality. She is very responsible and has persisted through various childhood issues with early surgeries. She makes friends and is very gregarious.

Veerle is a well traveled teenager. She has visited European countries and South Africa where she hiked Table Mountain in Cape Town with her family and toured Kruger Park.  This will be her first visit to America.

Won’t you be one of her lucky host families?
10 Reasons to Host an Exchange Student
in the words of our host parents
  1. You can learn that country’s may be different (culture, food, art, politics), but we are also not that different (want peace, family issues are the same, people vacation and go to work like we do).
  2. Teenagers keep you young and you tend to go places and do things you wouldn’t normally.
  3. You get to know/see your city and state because you want to ensure they see it too. Great excuse!
  4. Hosting provides an invaluable international/cultural experience for your children without leaving home.
  5. Creates a lifetime friendship around the world, which inspires a never ending worldly perspective.
  6. The world gets a little smaller and better. We love our International kids!
  7. Your entire family has a mutually beneficial education experience.
  8. Your eyes are open to what the younger generation is thinking.  We were able to have tremendously insightful discussions with our student on the different views regarding culture, society, government, world history and even politics.
  9. You have the chance to learn or practice a foreign language.
  10.  You create a lifetime of memories, with someone who will always be in your heart.

Boring Bylaws?

Not on our watch!  We need your help as our ad hoc committee (a dedicated quartet of bylaw busting aspiring Rotary Super Hero wannabes) works to review and update the Tacoma #8 Bylaws.  Watch your email box or mailbox for the Rotary Bylaw Survey.  Please take the time to open and respond to the survey.  The mission of our ad hoc committee is to gather input from club members and recommend Bylaws updates to our Club Directors.  Any changes to the Bylaws will only be made by a vote of our Members.  We need your help to ensure that the governing documents of our Club reflect the needs of all our fellow Rotarians.  The text of our Club Bylaws can be found here

Reflections from the meeting of July 13 by Sherri Stanton

President Mark Anderson rang the bell and thanked the anonymous meeting sponsor who donated their allotted time for other meeting activities.  Melissa Malott, Citizens for a Healthy Bay, gave our invocation and Don Hansen, Cascade Park Communities, invited the club to join him in an impromptu and rousing version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to celebrate the club’s upcoming social at the Rainiers game.  He then led us in the National Anthem accompanied by Jack Warnick on piano followed by the 4 Way Test and Don’s signature “5th element:”  - is it beneficial to our health and wellness.  Visiting Rotarians and visitors were announced and introduced with the help of Stephanie Farrar, Ten Capital and Harrison Laird, CBRE
Mark Anderson then invited Malcolm Russell of Tacoma Youth Marine Center to facilitate our Pandaka Graduation.  They were each asked to share what was the most exciting thing they had planned over the summer.  Melissa Malott, Christina Turner, Diane Kelleher, Karen Larsen and Stephen Deal all graduated to blue badges.
Mark Anderson invited Mike Wark, UWT, to introduce the speaker, Dr. David Reyes, UWT.  Dr. Reyes presented an overview of the University of Washington’s Population Health Initiative.  The initiative’s vision is to create a world where all people can live healthier and more fulfilling lives. Dr. Reyes shared data about life expectancies worldwide and the contributing factors, then brought it down to the local level of Pierce County and specific neighborhoods within the county.  Rotarians were encouraged to check out the publicly available Health Equity Report published by the Tacoma Pierce County Health Department. He described the three challenges that the initiative is attempting to address: strengthening communities and capacity, building healthy families and nurturing brain development in the early years.  In 25 years, the goal is to have research translated into policy, evidence of improved population health and decreased inequities.
Mark thanked Dr. Reyes for his presentation and presented him with a thank-you card.
Mark then called forward Larry Norvell, The Zoo Society to celebrate birthdays.  Of the seven members celebrating this week, Connie Brown, Jim Henderson and Joe Gordon Jr. were present and were asked to share the animal that their favorite person reminded them of.  Kim Bedier, Nancy Davis, Angie Martin and Mike Dunbar also celebrated a birthday this week.
Next Mark recognized members celebrating anniversaries in the club this week.
Diane Kelleher - 1 year; Cindy Grady - 6 years; Linda Nguyen - 7 years; Kit Evans - 13 years and Kathleen Olson - 23 years .
Mark called forward Michele Johnson, Pierce College for a paid announcement.  Michele invited Rotarians to attend Pierce College’s Golf Scholarship scramble on August 10th.  Proceeds from the event support scholarships for students.
Carolyn Weyrick announced that a few more volunteers were needed for Camp Goodtimes on July 20th and that Beer Servers were also needed for the Courage event on August 26th (2 shifts available).
There was time for True Confessions and Mark called Jim and Enid Harris forward. Jim shared that he and Enid were celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary. Enid added that their family had toured Europe in a mini van for 3 months when their kids were young, and they stayed strong as a family then and have four generations of family surrounding them now.
Karen Larsen made an appeal for host families on behalf of the Youth Exchange committee.  Host families are urgently needed for this year’s students, and in fact the young woman from the Netherlands does not yet have a family.  Rotarians were encouraged to spread the word and help recruit families who could take one of the students for a 3 month period.
Mark Anderson recognized Jim and Enid Harris’ anniversary and remarked that we were glad to have them as part of our Rotary family too.  He then thanked our speaker, reminded the club of the evening’s social at the Rainiers and announced that next meeting’s speakers would be Jake Fey and Laurie Jinkins.  After a final encouragement to “Live Rotary”, the meeting was adjourned.
