Thursday, September 28, 2017 VOL. NINETY-FOUR, Issue No. 13 Innovation in Tacoma Public Schools brought to you by Kathryn McCarthy |
You may wish you could go back-to-school after seeing the some of the innovative schools and programs in Tacoma Public Schools. Recognizing that every child is an individual with a unique learning style, students have their pick of more innovative schools and programs than any district in Washington. Innovation can be found across the district; however, 19 schools are designated as “Innovative Schools” for infusing a unique learning environment into the total school experience. Community and business partnerships play a key role in providing students with inspiring learning opportunities and real-world experiences that propel academic growth and prepare students for college and career. Tacoma Public Schools have been recognized regionally, state-wide and nationally for student achievement, academic growth, excellence in teaching and innovation. Join us to learn more from Kathryn McCarthy Strategic Communications and Marketing Manager at Tacoma Public Schools.

Bylaws Action On September 13 members were emailed the 3 changes that are under consideration. The changes were reviewed by Secretary Jim Henderson at the meeting on September 21. The club will be voting on the changes at our meeting on September 28. The Bylaws currently state that we must have a quorum present at the meeting in order to vote. (A quorum is defined as 1/3 of all active members.) You may be receiving a call to encourage your attendance this week in order that we are assured a quorum. Volunteers have devoted significant time and energy to this process and we are looking forward to action on Thursday! Please contact members of the Bylaws Task Force Committee if you have any questions or comments. Jim Henderson, Jeff Rounce, Stephen Deal, and Mark Anderson

September 30th we have a fantastic Rotary evening planned starting at 5:15 with a fun social at the highly popular Peaks and Pints - Taproom and Eatery in the Proctor District! Next we'll be attending Tacoma Little Theatre's production of "Rumors." It was Neil Simon's first farce . . . and reads like a classic Twilight Zone episode. "Rumors," is a madcap, slamming door farce set in a large home located just outside of New York in the year 1988. The characters are arriving as guests at a 10th Anniversary Dinner. The first couple to arrive discovers that one of their hosts (Charley) has apparently attempted suicide...unsuccessfully. Charley's wife, Myra, is nowhere to be found and neither are the servants. Through the course of the show, the audience never meets Charley or Myra. As more guests arrive, there are cover-ups, deceptions, mistaken identities, and a lot of huge laughs. Join us for the "Rumors" Social at Peaks and Pints - 5:15 pm on Saturday Evening, September 30th. Rotary members will receive a 10% Food Discount. If you can't join us at the social, then curtain time is 7:30 pm at Tacoma Little Theatre, 210 North I St, Tacoma, WA 98403, (253) 272-2281. For tickets, only $15 per person, call the Rotary Office, 253-473-7723. You can also pay for the tickets at any upcoming meeting. Please, join us for a laugh filled evening.

Reflections from the meeting of 9-21 by Jim Henderson |
President Mark Anderson called the September 21 meeting of the Rotary Club of Tacoma #8 to order, in the Grand Ballroom, by ringing the bell at 12:04pm and welcoming all. The invocation was given by President Elect Linda Kaye Briggs, Briggs and Associates. Evelyn Ryberg, Tacoma Community Foundation led us in the national anthem, minus the piano at this meeting. Evelyn also led us in the Four Way test. Today’s meeting was sponsored by Bill Baarsma, President of the Tacoma Historical Society. Carol Duris, Timberland Bank and Past President Mike Dunbar, Financial Insights took the mics around to visiting Rotarians and those with guests. Among the guests were Sharon Brown Hamilton, wife of our recently deceased member Jack Hamilton, and widow of Past President Warren Brown. Also attending were the son of Corey Hjalseth, as well as his sister Lori, who is a host Mom to Veerle one of our Exchange Students. New Vocational Services co-chairs Kim Bedier and Missy Zenczak suggested having new members introduce themselves and tell the club about their interests and work. John Pfaff, Bath Fitters, then came forward to introduce us to his wife, Cosette Pfaff. We learned that John and Cosette met in grade school, dated in high school, but twenty five years later, in 2001, reconnected. Cosette said she was humbled and honored to become a member as Tacoma #8 Rotary does amazing work. She has a Peer to Peer Executive Development Group which does business coaching, and has also been an adjunct professor at Pacific Lutheran University and teachers in the Business Department at Highline Community College. She said she loves teaching. In her leisure time she likes to hike, climb, kayak, and run. Between her and John they have three kids and she told us how she loves being a Grandma, and they have a treasured Yellow Lab. President Mark presented her with her Red Badge, Rotary pin, and then gave John his sponsor pin. Welcome to Tacoma #8 Rotary Cosette! President Mark then called forward Carol Webster from the Rotary Youth Exchange Committee to introduce our two new Inbound Exchange Students - Mikulas and Veerle. Mikulas was up first and comes to us from District 2240 in the Czech Republic. His District covers two countries. He shared a series of photos of his country and area where he lives. The Czech Republic has many castles and he said they are favorites of his. His home city is Ostrava, a city of around 311 thousand people. It is an Industrial City and has a huge Music Festival each year. His sponsoring Rotary Club only has 23 members but not that many attend each week. Mikulas is 16 and among his interests are nature, birds, bicycling and skiing. He has one sister who was an Exchange Student previously. Next up was Veerle, from the Netherlands. She is from Markela, and lives with her Mom and Dad and brother and sister, in a former farmhouse which has been restored. Her Dad works about 35 kilometers away, and is a senior specialist on water and groundwater issues. Her Mom has a small business, and she has a younger disabled sister, along with a family cat and dog and four donkeys. Veerle showed us photos of her city and the high school she attends, which she bikes to. She loves to ride horses and bake cakes. We are in for a wonderful time with both of these students for the next year. Our meeting sponsor, Bill Baarsma then came forward to talk about the Tacoma Historical Society, which is in the Provident Building, which opened in 1904. Bill talked about the current exhibit for the society – called ‘Showtime’. They also have a dinner coming up to honor Civil Rights Pioneers who shaped Tacoma’s history. Bill said there are monthly lectures about Tacoma’s history at the University of Puget Sound. President Mark recognized members with Service Anniversaries: our own Club Bookkeeper Joy Vivar-Beeks – one year; Mike Shields – 6 years, Nurhan Karakas – 10 years, and John Winskill – 31 years. Coming forward to help celebrate birthdays was Past President Buck Thompson. If you have not had Buck celebrate your birthday you are missing a treat with his very clever poems. In attendance were Jim Shoemake and Phil Berggren, whose birthday was today. Buck led us in singing him happy birthday. Also celebrating this week, but not at the meeting were Mark Starnes, Jeff Albers, and Rob Novasky. President Mark then called forward Club Secretary Jim Henderson to give a brief description of the three Bylaws Proposals. Jim thanked the other members of the Bylaws Task Force – President Mark, Past President Jeff Rounce, and Stephen Deal. He reviewed key areas of the proposals on adding the category of Family to the Membership types; allowing a second additional active member to the Corporate Membership; and a change in the Nominations and Elections area where two different nominating committees would be elected – Board and Officers. The Officer Nominating Committee would put forth consensus candidates. The proposals will be voted on by the club at the Sept. 28 meeting and President Mark appealed to the members to attend so we have a quorum as specified in the current bylaws. Past President Don Doman then came forwarded to promote the next event for the club’s Culture Vultures – the play Rumors on September 30 at the Tacoma Little Theatre. Tickets are available through the Rotary Office and there will be a gathering at ‘Peaks and Pints’ in the Proctor District before going to the theatre. Literacy Committee Chair Susan Barbeau then updated the club on the Little Libraries project and said they have been built, painted and are ready to be installed on Oct. 5 and that there is a need for 20 members to help do the installation. Mark thanked Mikulas and Veerle for talking to us, welcomed Cosette to the Club, and thanked Bill Baarsma for being the meeting sponsor. Tonight’s social will be at the East West Café in the Proctor District. Next weeks meeting speaker will be Kathryn McCarthy speaking on Innovation In Tacoma Public Schools. Mark encouraged us to go out and Live Rotary! as he adjourned the meeting at 1:00pm.
