Rotary Club of Tacoma #8
Serving our Community

Many hands make for light work! Join us as we help our literacy committee with a hands-on project and hear about the great work they have been doing this year!  We will also award Reach Out and Read and Read2Me with funds made possible from the Raise the Paddle at this year’s auction. But even more hands make the work lighter. . . .our Community Grants Committee has also been hard at work this Spring.  We will be presenting grants to 11 incredible non-profits who serve those in need in our community; Big Brothers Big Sisters, CASA Kids, Citizens for a Healthy Bay, College Success Foundation, Emergency Food Network, Neighborhood Clinic, Palmer Minority Scholarship Foundation, Peace Community Center, Point Defiance Ruston Senior Center, Rebuilding Together South Sound and Trinity Learning Center. Learn about those who benefit from your generosity.

MIKULAS                                      VEERLE

2017-18 EXCHANGE STUDENT INFORMATION

Hello my name is Mikulas Rimanek and I am 15 years old. I live in Ostrava, Czech Republic. I am a Rotary Exchange student who has been assigned to come to beautiful Tacoma, Washington!

My parents, Tomas and Barbara Rimanek are very excited for me to meet my new host families for the 2017-18 school year at Stadium High School! I have a “very good” rating for my English studies and I speak German too. I have excellent ratings in all my classes. I like to balance my hobbies with my school studies. I love nature, birding and exploring the wild. I am very concerned about the protection of the environment. I think I will study biology and ornithology in university.

I am interested in meeting new people, get to know new places in the world. I am keenly interested in taking biology at Stadium to compare the differences there and in my school. I want to become familiar with organizations that are doing environmental protection operating in Tacoma that can be used in Czech Republic.

I love to eat and cook too!

Will you be my new host family?

Veerle Obdeijn from the Netherlands will be arriving in August  from the village of Markelo about 1.5 hrs outside of Amsterdam. Veerle is an avid horsewoman. She loves music and plays violin. In the summer, she joins her older brother in Friesland for sailing camp.

Veerle bikes to school. She is in secondary school in Holland. Her Dad works as a project manager with an environmental consultancy and her Mom runs an independent recreation business from home. She has an older brother and younger sister. Her parents report that she loves to sing and has a very even tempered personality. She is very responsible and has persisted through various childhood issues with early surgeries. She makes friends and is very gregarious.

Veerle is a well traveled teenager. She has visited European countries and South Africa where she hiked Table Mountain in Cape Town with her family and toured Kruger Park.  This will be her first visit to America.

Won’t you be one of her lucky host families?

SIGN UP FOR GALLEYSIDE

It's hard to believe that in less than 2 weeks we will be celebrating Becky's year end with a Galleyside gathering at Dockton State Park on Vashon Island. We have 6 fabulous boats, Captains and First Mates who will help us experience a day to remember.
For those of you who may not have participated before, the Captains normally have you meet them at their boats shortly after the dismissal of the Rotary meeting. You are then able to enjoy fellowship and fun (hopefully in the sun)  on your ride to Vashon Island.  We will have a delicious dinner awaiting you, and more time for socializing.  The cost of Galleyside is $35 and there may be an additional expense for refreshments on the boat. (your Captain or First Mate will let you know)  For those of you who can't take the time to sail over to the island consider taking the ferry over, the sailings are regular and it's a nice trip!
Please contact the office or our Galleyside Planner extraordinaire Maria Harlow at maria.harlow@hotmail.com to let us know that you are available. Please make plans to join us!

Due to safety reasons, closed toe shoes are required.

Liability Waiver Form: All new volunteers to EFN need to submit a Liability Waiver. Returning volunteers do not need to submit another form unless their information has recently changed. Volunteers age 14-17 need to have the form electronically signed by a parent or guardian. The Liability Waiver can be found here - Liability Waiver

Please sign up at the weekly meeting or let Jim Whitacre know if you are able to join in and lend a hand!

HIGHLIGHTING YOUR BUSINESS

It looks like we have meeting sponsors covered for the remainder of the Rotary year. Special thanks to all of our wonderful members who supported the club in this way. No rest for the Vocational Services Committee however, as they are already looking for members to sponsor our summer meetings.  Now is your chance to help the club offset the cost of the speaker's meal, gift and other program expenses, by signing up for a meeting.  Have your company’s name in lights and sign up today.

Meeting Sponsor Cost:  $100 per meeting.  We are now allowing a 1 minute video in lieu of a slide and 1-2 minute presentation.

To sponsor a meeting, contact Don Sheppard or the Rotary office.

Reflections from the meeting of June 15 by Jeff Rounce

This meeting was to be a celebration of Tacoma’s Maritime Heritage, complete with a sky view of the Festival of Sail parade of Tall Ships.  Unfortunately, the plentiful water this day was in the form of misty rain showers and dense fog.  Nevertheless, our members — many veterans of the Pacific Northwest’s interminable wet spring seasons — did enjoy a delightful nautical celebration.
President Becky Fontaine rang the ship’s bell to commence the meeting, then introduced Linda Kaye Briggs, president-elect-nominee, who shared a meaningful invocation, with particular reference to our member Dawn Lucien, who had “sailed west over the horizon” the prior Saturday.  A more extensive commemoration will be held at a future meeting.
Carlyn Roy of TAPCO Credit Union, provided an up-lifting acapella rendition of the National Anthem and Rotary Four-Way Test.  Meeting sponsor Cap Pearson handed over his time to Kirsten Willis; more on this later.
Elliot Stockstad, Habitat for Humanity, and Maria Harlow, now with Names Family Foundation, circulated through the crowd with microphones for the introductions of visiting Rotarians and guests.  Included today was Dorothee Dillon a former #8 Exchange Student from Belgium, who was visiting Carolyn Else, along with her fiancé and father.
The featured program speaker, Capt. Skip Anderson, was introduced by his brother, the incoming president of Rotary #8 – Mark Anderson.  Both used their formative years at Annapolis, as midshipmen at U.S. Naval Academy, to move into military service in our nation’s water-based armed forces.  While Mark’s duties were under water (submariner) and Skip stayed on the surface, eventually commander a destroyer and other ships during his 24-year career, both are now based in the Puget Sound region.  Skip and his wife, Jan, operate Flagship Maritime Training – a Tacoma-based private vocational school where students qualify for captain’s licenses under standards of the U.S. Coast Guard.  Skip’s very interesting program features extensive, exciting photographs from local waters taken by his wife’s business, Jan’s Marine Photography.  A fascinating program that was very entertaining and colorful.
The return to Rotary business features Kirsten Willis’ year-end report on Project Greater Good, wherein more than 140 Tacoma Rotarians participated in raising $82,600 for sharing with Tacoma Rotary Foundation, Rotary International Foundation, and Club support of projects and grants awarded.
Jonathan Murray, Uncharted Waters (remember, this meeting was a water theme), observed birthdays for the week.  Celebrants were invited to identify their favorite Super Hero, in honor of the movie launch this week of Wonder Woman.  Jack Warnick noted that he was marking his 85th birthday and remembers the first edition versions of both Batman and Superman.  Elliot Stockstad, the only other celebrant to attend the meeting, named Iron Man as his fave.
John Pfaff, two years, and David Flentge, 20 years, were called out by President Becky recognizing their club anniversaries.
Special announcements of the upcoming “Rotary at the Rainiers” multi-club social on July 13  and Galleyside / Turn-over Day on June 29th were voiced.  Past president Jim Whitacre invited all to participate in a food repack project on July 8, serving the BBQ lunch for Crystal Judson Family Shelter on July 21 and Camp Goodtimes on July 20th.
Current exchange student Louis Blindenbacher said his farewell to our Club, as he will be returning to his Switzerland home and family within the week as  “a changed person,” in his words. Plenty of sincere gratitude for his wonderful year in Tacoma was shared.
True Confessions began with President Becky’s proud grandma announcement.  Late birthday fines came from several members, among them travelers to London, Germany, Scotland and “9 cities in 8 weeks” by one Rotarian.  We also heard proud declarations for graduations and special remembrance of Julie Fitzner, a former #8 exchange student, who is now a leader of World Health Organization (WHO) medical services for children. She will be at a conference in Seattle soon.
With a reminder that she has but two meetings remaining in her year as club president, Becky adjourned this meeting with another ring of the bell.   “Fair skies and following seas to all.”

Sound advice for Service Above Self Living, by Past President Bill Baxter

“You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving. The great acts of love are done by those who are habitually performing small acts of kindness." Victor Hugo
