Creating Peace - Student by Student

We can agree that the one thing that the world can use right now is peace. Rotary Youth Exchange is creating peace one student at a time. The relationship between students and their host families contribute to a cultural understanding that is hoped will lead to a more interconnected and peaceful world.

Rotary Youth Exchange has been a part of Rotary International since 1929. About 9,000 students between 15 and 19 are sponsored by Rotary Clubs annually between 80 countries. These kids experience new cultures and experiences that can often be life changing.

There are long term placements allowing students a full school year in a foreign country and short term placements that last just 30 days during the summer and reciprocate with the host family in the foreign country.

Rotarians participate as volunteers. Each Rotary must pass muster in order to receive certification to receive a student. That means that a high level of supervision is maintained for youth protection to certify as an Exchange club. Students are given a small stipend each month while they are here to offset basic expenses. Through our fundraising efforts and gifts to Project Greater Good we are able to give our incoming students a monthly stipend, as well as paying for them to attend conferences and trips to British Columbia and California.

Last year we sent 3 students abroad who experienced life changing opportunities and we welcomed Ailsa Louis and Luis. This year Veerle and Mikulas will arrive on the 25th and the 26th  and you will all have the opportunity to meet them soon!

Rotary Youth Exchange is a pillar of Rotary International work around the world. It is just one of the ways Rotary contributes to the peace of the world. Rotarians who have hosted these children have enjoyed the experience of teaching and learning about another culture. These kids never forget their experiences and many Rotarians have stayed in touch with these wonderful ambassadors as they grew up, married, had families and then traveled back to visit. It is truly a long lasting relationship.

Reflections from the meeting of August 17 by Jeremy Fogelquist

Promptly at 12:00pm, President Mark Anderson, stood from the head table and announced the start of the meeting by loudly ringing the bell. Rick Oldenburg, Oldenburg and Associates, provided the invocation and Past President Barry Benson of Windemere lead us in the National Anthem accompanied by Jack Warnick on the piano, followed by the 4 way test. President Mark thanked Elliot Stockstad, Habitat for Humanity, for being the meeting sponsor this week.  President Mark invited all visiting Rotarians and members with guests to stand and introduce themselves while Don Doman, PublicDoman and Ali Criss, Financial Insights carried the mics.  There were a number of guests and visiting Rotarians that joined us today to hear the mayoral candidates speak.
President Mark then called Pat Steel forward to introduce our newest member, Lori Harnick. After the nice introduction, Mark presented Lori with her pin and badge and Pat with his sponsor pin and asked everyone to provide Lori with a warm Rotary welcome.  President Mark called on Pamela Transue, Past Service Education, to introduce and explain the format of the program today.  Today's speakers were Tacoma's mayoral candidates, Jim Merritt and Victoria Woodards. They both did  a good job discussing their great ideas about pressing issues pertinent to Tacoma. It is apparent that both candidates are focused on business retention and growing jobs within Tacoma.  At the end of the remarks President Mark thanked Jim and Victoria and presented them with thank you cards.
President Mark then called forward Elliot Stockstad to talk about Habitat for Humanity.  Elliot invited everyone to join and donate to the Habitat Challenge and repel down the Hotel Murano on September 22, 2017.  He warned that there are only twelve spots still available. Mike Dunbar, Financial Insights was going to come forward to celebrate birthdays; however, none of the birthday participants showed up to Rotary today.  Regardless, here is the list of the birthday celebrants; Warren FosterRichard Jamison,  Betty Ann PopeKen OlsonWhitney Grisaffi and Ed Ramos. The anniversaries included; Hunter GeorgeSherri StantonChris Hays,  Mike BitterlingDoug Rohner and Phil Berggren.
President Mark reminded everyone of the offsite meeting at CI Shenanigans on August 31, and reminded members that sign ups are required.  President Mark then asked for a slide to be put up for the upcoming committee meetings, but the slide clicked off as quickly as it was put up.  Mark replied that if you didn't see the slide to stop paying attention to him and start paying attention to the slide. President Mark invited Ali Criss to make her way to the front to make an announcement about the Little Free Library Build coming up this Wednesday, August 23rd. Jim Whitacre made an announcement for Stuff the Bus and made the final ask for donations and backpack stuffers as well as last call for EFN volunteers.
There was a little bit of time for true confessions and Carol Webster made her way to the front to announce that we are still in need of one more host family for an exchange student who will be arriving soon.  Please let the office know if you are interested.  Alex Trettin announced that Don Hansen is his hero for making him ride 84 miles to train for the upcoming Courage ride.  Jack Warnick announced that he and Lilly just had their 64th wedding anniversary. Ray Schuler paid a fine for taking too many trips and playing in too many golf tournaments.
President Mark then announced that there will be a pin check and everyone that is not wearing a pin needed to put $2 in the basket on the table. President Mark thanked today's speakers and welcomed the club's newest member Lori HarnickPresident Mark thanked Pat Steel, Christa Brothers, and Carlyn Roy for proposing her. The social tonight is at the Farrelli’s on Grand Loop Way in Ruston at 5:00 pm. Next week’s meeting will feature our Rotary Youth Exchange program with presentations by members of the committee, exchange students, and their host families.  You are sure to be inspired to become involved in this wonderful program, even perhaps as a host parent!
With the suggestion to go out and Live Rotary, the meeting adjourned.
